Handgun Owner looking for advice on first rifle(s)

Figure it is time to go ahead and purchase before it is much more difficult to do so (good excuse as any since I've wanted one for a while). I am actually looking for something for hunting and possibly a 2d rifle for tactical home defense.
Looking at:
Remington 700 or 770
Springfield Armory M1 Garand or SOCOM model
Wanting to hear from owners with practical experience with these particular weapons. Either that or someone to talk me into some other brand/model. Thanks in advance for any/all input.

You mean the modern M1A, right? in 308?
I say look into them more for the moment, we don't know or think everything in this ban will pass, but if it does, those are weapons that will not be available anymore after it takes effect.
I am a big fan of the Rem 700 as well, but they will be available for purchase for quite some time, its a proven design that isnt going anywhere.

700 is tried and true 770 is lower quality economy model. Have good experiences with model 700s for hunting. I will leave advice on the home security rifles to someone else.

DON'T get a 770. If you want something in that price point get a mossberg 100 atr, much better gun.

Several R700 models. What is the advantage of one over the other? The 700 SPS Stainless looks good at a decent MRSP.

The Socom 16 is a fantastic M1A. If you want a good 308 battle rifle, it is balls-to-the-wall reliable. I also love the loud "PING" from the operating rod after every shot. It is just the perfect man's gun. I think if you plan to buy one of these soon you won't have any trouble. Although they are covered under the AWB, they aren't nearly as "scary" looking as AR15s and AK47s.
The Remington 700 is a tried-and-true hunting and military rifle. My dad has 3 (.243, .260, 30-06) that are in the hunting rotation. All are capable of amazing accuracy with the right load and have great triggers from the factory. You can't go wrong.
ETA: I believe the SPS is a heavy-barrel tactical model. I'm sure it would be good for hunting but I think there are a few others that function better for the job.

Remington 700 is a great rifle for hunting. 308 is a great all around caliber. You can do some slight modifications to a 700 chambered in 308 and have a great long-range gun too.
For home defense, I'd recommend a pump shotgun, like a Remington 870. You can get them for <$400 and even tacticool it out if you want.

My Remington 870 was had from Bud's Gun Shop for $348. It is bulletproof reliable and goes bang every time.

I have 700 .308 with a Burris scope and bipod. Tikka would probably be my next rifle purchase though.

i never get why someone wants a high velocity round for home defense?
there is a nice used 870 here at Cabelas for 329.00 pistol grip, nice muzzle break. Sick
I love all the rifles you mentioned and my question to you is , why not own them all. I have wanted a Garand for ages, ever since I bought my M1a I wanted to get the Garand.

Because a rifle round will put someone out of the fight much more effectively than a handgun. And if choosing the right ammunition, overpenetration is not a danger.
I think a shotgun is the best since the shot pattern is a big larger (about softball-sized at home distances) and it still packs one hell of a punch. But if someone uses a rifle with, say, Hornady Vmax ammunition designed to fragment, I'm not going to tell them they are making a mistake. It is quite capable.
