The wife thinks it's gross. I grew up eating it. What say the F&DB?

Simple question for her to consider. "What do you put in a bowl of cereal in the morning"? A thing for you to remember, "Real men don't give a shite about what others think about what they eat".

I remember when I was a kid, my grandfather would put it in buttermilk, put it in the fridge for a while, then take it out and eat it.

Damn fine eatin' son!
While I always make homemade cornbread for eating with hot food, there is nothin' wrong with a pone of Jiffy for eating in milk.

My mother loves it. She grew up eating it. It's not for me, though I do like some crispy cornbread crouton like pieces in cream of shrimp bisque sometimes.

Yep, I guess it was more of a Coush Coush which to me is crumbled cornbread, served in milk and always had canned peaches over it.

2 c. yellow corn meal
1-1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1-1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. bacon drippings or vegetable oil

Combine the corn meal, salt, baking powder, and milk in medium sized bowl. Mix well. heat the bacon drippings in a medium sized cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the corn meal mixture and allow a crust to form at the bottom. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, scraping the bottom of the skillet using a spatula to stir and fold the crust. Cook until mixture is golden and resembles crumbled cornbread. Serve like cereal with milk and sugar, or as a stand alone dish with cane sugar drizzled over it. The result is a warm satisfying meal that’s sweet and chocked full of nice crispy bites..
