Spin-off to an SECr thread.

How long do you think it will take a team to go 19-0? Will it ever happen? Will the 1972 Dolphins still be alive?

Do you see any current teams being able to do it?

I think it will happen next year. Broncos.

The 2009 Colts probably would have gone undefeated if they hadn't pulled their starters against the Jets and Bills. Now, they still would have lost in the Super Bowl but I don't think 19-0 is as impossible of a feat as people think it is.

Sean Payton will rummage through the league next year. Undefeated. With a Super Bowl. And Drew Brees throws for 5400 yards. Mark my words.

On March 7th, 2033 in Beijing (the NFL will have moved to a 21 game schedule and Goodell banned Super Bowls in the U.S. in 2028) the London Jaguars beat the Mexico City Rams to go 19-0. On March 8th, Mercury Morris dies. On March 9th, the win is overturned because a Jaguars player was determined to have hit the Rams QB, resulting in a disqualification for the entire team.

If the Patriots were to keep Aquib Talib, sign Sean Smith, find a big time pass rusher in the draft they could do it next year

In today's day and age of salary caps and parody it will never happen.

Again, the Colts would have went 16-0 in 2009 if they hadn't rested their starters. The Packers went 15-1 last year. It's actually become easier to dominate in today's game because you don't need to have a great all-around team to win big. You just need to have a great QB. The Giants won the Super Bowl last year while ranking dead last in rushing. The '09 Saints won the Super Bowl with the 25th ranked defense. The Super Bowl champion '06 Colts were dead last in rushing defense. In the '80s, it would have been impossible to win the Super Bowl with those type of stats. Now, it happens all the time.

Going undefeated in the regular season is probably gets you 40% of the way to an undefeated season. Still mountains of work to do IMO.

There was just as much parity in the 2007 season.

If the 2007 Patriots could go 18-0 and be leading with 45 seconds remaining in Game 19, it seems that in fact it could be done with the requisite amount of luck helping out along the way.

I think people discount how good that team actually was. That team was as elite and dominant as any team the NFL has ever seen. They couldn't even go undefeated, and they had an all-time head coach/QB combo.

I just don't see it happening ever if the Patriots couldn't do it.

I think it will happen eventually. Just need the right combination of events. Pats came close back in 2007. I believe that two teams have won the Super Bowl with a 15-1 record, so they were just one win away.

The thing that makes it less likely is if a team is like 13-0 and wraps up home field advantage they may not play starters in those meaningless last regular season games.

I certainly don't think it's impossible, but the end of the regular season is such a gamble. If you're 13-0 and have locked up home field through the playoffs, why play all your starters for 4 quarters in meaningless games and risk injury? There is essentially no reward yet very high risk.

If you keep the pedal to the floor, you're basically saying you value chasing a record over having your best shot to win the Super Bowl.

2 things you guys are not considering.

1. Teams who find themselves in the position of being 13-0, 14-0, etc. talk about how the record itself becomes a huge burden and distraction. So that works against you.

2. Injuries, injuries, injuries. It does not matter how great your roster is on day one, injuries can absolutely decimate a squad. Often times the team that ends up winning the super bowl is the one who got really lucky with lack of key injuries compared to peers. Colts beat the Saints in the super bowl if Dwight Freeney does not get hurt in the AFC Championship. He was to their defense what Peyton was to their offense. It revolved entirely around him and what he could do. Colts couldn't get off the field without him.

Well actually it makes more sense to play all 16 games as hard as possible because the ast decade has shown playing well going into the playoffs is way more important than your overall record.

A team could be trying to stay on edge moreso than going for the record. Seems like the teams that rest their starters the last couple games are sometimes a bit flat come playoff time
