It seems to me that in a number of years during this recent "golden era" of LSU football that our D is dominant early in the year but can hold opponents when need late in the year. Even in 07 we were having problems with stopping people from scoring later in the year. Not bashing the D, as that's not the real problem, but has this been noticed by anyone else? If so, why do you think it happens?

It does. 07 D was probably the worst in BCS era for a champion to have.

When your defense stays on the field 75-90% of a game, its hard to be fresh.

wear and tear, schemes figured out, etc. Look at the production Bama gave up late in the year vs. LSU, A&M and Georgia...

Auburn's was pretty bad when Fairley wasn't pancaking people.

that is just football and contact sports in general. It happens to pretty much every team its hard to keep the gas down throughout a season when you get beat up every game and especially if you lose motivation.

Dunkelman think of it this way, if our defense wasn't so great every year and played as great as they do we would be a sub par 6-7 win team a year.

Defense got wore down. The team didn't have the conditioning they did the prior season and the defense was on the field too long.

i agree, the team isn't balanced in terms of time of possession, which results in the defense giving up plays as the game/season goes on. i think the defense will be good enough for LSU to win the west next year, the problem is, i don't have any confidence in the offense. sure, the defense will have it's ups and downs, but the talent and coaching is there. i wish i could say the same for the offense.

2010 Auburn says hello. Fairley also says cheap shot.

And FTR talent wise that 07 defense was great, you failed to mention that it wasnt coached by Chief either. Scheme was terrible for that D that year.

2007, 2010, and 2012 are the biggest examples of LSU's D getting worse and ending up pretty bad as the year went on.

the 07 D had their bad moments, but they stood up when they had to in the SECCG and BCSCG.

The Boat, I would expect better from you.

When a year wears on and you are the only thing keeping your team in games, shite gets pretty tough. If the offense can get 15-20 more plays per game, per whole season, our defense doesn't drop off at the end.

This could be contributed to our defenses back being against the wall all year due to our lack of offense. You can only rely on your D so many times before it just physically can't hold up. It's like the Florida game. When your offense is so bad you giving up a single TD loses the game, there isn't much you can do. That takes a toll throughout the course of the year. We need our best defense to start being our offense. Not vice versa.

The offense played great against Miss St and Ole Miss and the d played poorly. The only game that works for is the bowl game. The secondary went to shite without having injury problems.
