Is it stubbornness or fear?

I'm not sure how to classify our current offensive philosophy. It's very very vanilla, we all know this, but when I watch our games, I get the feeling that it's both stubbornness and fear. Miles is too stubborn to do anything creative to catch an opponent off guard but also seems scared to run anything more complex than a basic high school offense. I'm not saying I know more about the game of football than our coaches, but I do know if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten. Right now, we are getting very sub par results from what could be a talented offense if used correctly

I think it is fear. They don't want the offense to lose the game and would rather play it safe counting on the defense or a big special teams play to help win the game.

My philosophy is that if you have a great defense to keep you in games, then you also have a great defense to take chances with that can bail you out if you do make a mistake on offense.

I think the year J. Lee threw all those INTs forever scared Miles into being the conservative coach he is today.

It could be. But in J. Lee's senior year, *CLM seemed willing to let it go and the stats were definitely on the upswing. Until he started bringing JJ back in, from the Bama game forward, things started looking iffy again. And with Mett, it's been not too different from game to game, even possession to possession. No sense that there is a consistent mind directing the offensive scheme.

He game planned to Lee's strengths when he had to after the Jefferson suspension, but clearly showed his preference for conservationism as soon as Jefferson was reinstated, which was when the offense once again became vanilla and impotent. Miles appears to be a better coach when his hand is forced and he can't do what he'd prefer to do.

Both, I think this year still the fear of turning loose a 1st year starting qb. And all football coaches are stubborn to an extent. Most coaches feel that as long as the play is executed correctly it will work.
