to those in the "10 Win Crowd" I submit this.
How can 10 wins be an elite accomplishment anymore? LSU now plays 13 total games (including bowl games). Of those, I'll break down the games into 3 categories.
Category 1- Gimme Wins. These are games that under no circumstance SHOULD LSU ever lose, or be in danger of losing. These are the locked in Ws before the season starts.
Category 2- A Class Above Games. These are the games where LSU clearly outclasses the opponent, and, unless they really wet the bed, should win easily. If they wet the bed, a loss is possible, however.
Category 3- Actual Football Games. These are games where LSU has an equal, or close to equal opponent, and must play well to actually win the game.
Reviewing the 2012 schedule, LSU had a total of 6 wins against teams in the Gimme category (Note: if LSU played like shite and kept the game close, that does not erase the fact that the game was a gimme). Those games were, UNT, Washington, Idaho, Towson, Ole Miss, and Auburn.
2 wins came in games where LSU clearly outclassed the opponent, but needed to play well to win the game. Those were, Miss State, and Arkansas. So, practically speaking, there were only 5 actual football games this year. In those 5 games, UF, USCe, TAMU, BAMA, and Clemson, LSU went 2-3.
Simply put, when your schedule GIVES you 8 wins, a 10 win season is not really much of an accomplishment.

FWIW, I don't count the cupcakes in the win column—at least the wins that count. By my reckoning, LSU finish 7-3 this season. Forget the gimmes against the Southwest Northeast Idaho Techs of the world.

That's another way of saying ... 10 wins is a bullshite figure for any school that plays 3 or 4 cupcakes.

You can't say Washington was a gimme game, they beat Stanford, who everyone on the rant seems to admire for their offensive prowess.

Ole Miss in BR is never a gimme game.

Here is what I think the problem is, to a lot of our fanbase:

Les Miles gets LSU to 10 wins almost every season, and he doesn't sit well with most of our fans. Therefore, a 10 win season can't be anything special, because that would mean Miles is doing something right, and lots of people don't want to consider that to be the case.

Agreed. But throw out North Texas, Idaho, and Towson and its really a nine-game regular season where we went 7-2. That's not terrible, considering who we lost to. What is terrible is that our offense looked like cold dog poo agains Florida and that our offense couldn't pick up a first down to end the game against Alabama (and the defense blew it in the latter of these two games).

Additionally, we struggled mightily against the worst Auburn team to step foot on the field in years, Ole Miss, and Arkansas.

We are, for the most part, watching a program that is habitually a few plays from being undefeated and a few plays away from having two or three more losses.

Every game shouldn't be a blowout win for us, but we should not be playing to the level of our competition every damn time out.

Absolutely. I'm as pissed as the next guy that we dropped the figurative ball, but look at all the injuries and suspensions we had.

Overall, a pretty good season with some bonehead coaching calls unfortunately.

It's better than 1-9 wins.

10 is still a very good record, unfortunately, not all "10s" are equal.
In the SEC, it means we are likely out of the SEC Championship game and the NC game.

it is a good record for coaches who want to build a resume and move on to the pros, or another institution at some point.

In the SEC and playing a halfway decent OOC, yes. LSU is still elite.

I totally disagree with Ole Miss and Washington being gimme games and so does MSU and Stanford.

I agree that we underperformed in damn near every game. But we are still the best in the SEC over the last 10 years. If these seasons keep happening then maybe we lose that status.

The league was really good this year, just because 6 teams won 10+ games, doesn't devalue it for me.

That's my point. It's a pretty good season, but does not come close to qualifying as an elite year.
Furthermore, if we win 10 games for the next 5 years straight, we are not an elite program for all of the reasons listed in the OP

Yes, it is. Ten wins IN THE HARDEST DIVISION, IN THE HARDEST CONF is elite. Don't let the Nega- life people tell you it's not. Only one SEC WEST team was better than us this year. We a had a good year all the while having to replace 3 starting olinemen, 2 starting Lb, starting rb, and a starting cb( whom was the national and SEC defensive player of the year). So yes ,2012 was a good year. Look at Texas, USC ( started #1 and lost 5 games, the last to a team that runs the triple option) and Auburn and tell me if these programs would've like ten wins? All of these programs have recruited better than LSU.

Ole miss was not horrible this year. They had A&M beat, but ended up losing by 3.
