NFL clubs asking about Saban, but Alabama coach is saying no

quote:

NFL teams that have been inquiring about Alabama coach Nick Saban in recent days and weeks have been told in no uncertain terms: thanks, but no thanks.

At least so far. Some franchises with vacancies have sent feelers toward Saban and the Alabama camp regarding his seriousness about returning to the NFL. He has told these inquirers that he isn't coming back.

The fact that NFL teams are violating protocol about contacting a college coach before the season ends isn't a surprise. The fact that teams are pursuing Saban isn't a surprise.

Though Saban has done one thing and said another before -- see Dolphins, Miami -- the fact that he's saying no so forcibly is perhaps the greatest indicator that he's serious about staying at Alabama. This is the indication after speaking to NFL teams and other football officials in recent days.

One team official said Saban is using a line from former Atlanta coach Jerry Glanville, that the NFL stands for "Not For Long," meaning, the life of an NFL coach is short -- whereas a good college coach can last much longer.

It's unclear which teams have contacted Alabama. Several league sources say most, if not all of them, have reached out to Saban in some unofficial capacity, and Saban or his camp has been extremely clear about his intentions.

This time, by saying he's staying, Saban might actually be saying what he means.

Alabama's rivals will never believe this story.

Until Bama curb stomps Notre Dame and Saban signs a new Alabama contract...

Who cares? The haters are just going to hate.

Why would he sign a new contract? He's under contract until he's 70

More money. If he beats Notre Dame on Monday I would offer him a contract that would make him the highest paid coach in football, and that is including the National Football League.

Oh, hell, I don't know. He may want a piece of Alabama's endowment.

Whenever people say it can't be done, Saban blows it out of the water.

Probably the #1 reason why Saban is staying put. Job security is far stronger in college than it is in the NFL. Can you imagine Les Miles lasting 10+ years in the NFL as he likely will at LSU?

I think he will stay. Enjoys the power of being a college coach.

That being said, he is a liar.

Hes already said that to an extent he regrets leaving LSU, I don't expect him to make that mistake twice, unless he's 100% sure and ready to leave.

I didnt think there was any chance he would try the pros again until last week when he started revising how he handled the Drew Brees situation. What difference does it make now to him or Brees? Either way he is working to get interest from the NFL. Ultimate goal is money. He doesnt have the courage to try the NFL again

I would imagine that a university contacting a NFL coach before the season ends is ok in your world

They dont even have to talk to him directly. Its all handled by Sexton. The permission to talk to him story is a joke.He took the LSU job without setting foot on campus.

Yeah, but the script A's will go to their graves arguing that Bama never contacted him until the Dolphins season was over.

Saban LOVES being pursued. He'll say no like he did to Miami and Bama. He just wants one to keep coming, keep stroking and beg him the right way and he goes.

If they don't keep stroking and begging he stays but its got nothing to do with his "love" for Bamaland either way. Saban loves himself and money.

It is a business and business is good. He could easily demand 9-10 million a year and it would be worth it. Alabama is top five in football revenue and he's a large reason why.

What are you insinuating? Mal Moore didn't make direct contact with Saban until the day after Saban's last game as the Dolphin's head coach. This has been verified by Mal Moore and Jimmy Sexton. But it's what you believe that really counts.

And, for the record, I don't give a damn when someone tries to pursue a coach they want, be it in the season or after the season has concluded.
