I hunt with responsible people if you are around idiots that don't know how to handle guns:::::::::: don't hang out with them. I may rethink my statement though while typing this my gun just went off in the safe crazy crazy!

Why would you even take the chance of an accidental discharge? It's not like you have to get tools out to unload the gun. It's an incredibly dumb risk to take.

What risk? I don't understand your issue. If you always handle the gun like you should, then an accidental discharge doesn't matter.

All this being said, I keep my rifle unloaded at base camp but the second I step out of my truck with intent to hurt something, its loaded.

Suppose you fall while climbing the ladder? The gun might be pointed somewhere you don't want it to be pointed (like at your head) when you hit the ground. It absolutely will not go off if there isn't a round in the chamber. It MIGHT go off if there is one in there.

No matter how acute the risks are, the consequences can be huge and it's the simplest gun risk to eliminate.

I can certainly see where he's coming from, when he mentions climbing a stand. I have to add the caveat to my opinion that I haven't hunted on an elevated stand for years and never have hunted alone.

If at some point I did one or both, my safety precautions would most likely be different.

Well if the deer were shooting back that would be helpful to keep it loaded.

I hunt with a bunch of guys who don't unload their guns all season. You never know when you will see a deer while riding around the lease.

On a side note, do you ride around with a loaded pistol? If so, which I'm sure most of us do, what's the difference?

Well walking with a loaded gun is much different than climbing or riding with one IMO. You have wayyyyyyyyyy less muzzle control when climbing ladders or riding fourwheelers. I walk around with a loaded gun all the time and certainly do not feel like it's dangerous because I have 100% control over where my gun is pointed. As long as I have my hands on it I'm not nervous.

Grassy, nobody has to agree with me. I have nothing better to do on a rainy evening like this than talk about things that I don't understand

ETA: I guess the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around is why does the gun need to be loaded when you can't even shoot it?

I agree at the camp you have no reason to have a loaded gun. Ok I'll agree with that ohh and you-may fall off the stand and the gun will go off. Hell your gun may accidentally drop from the stand and go off why even load the damn things. Just keep a bullet in your pocket when you see a deer or hog load then shoot. If you don't do that then quit bitching its all the same.

Some might argue that guns have an increased chance of getting discharged when you're manipulating bullets in and out of them...

and you're suggesting more manipulatin'

considering a drink myself

For me getting in a stand I'm not worried about the gun going off as much as losing balance and falling. I always pull my gun up with a string that way I don't need to worry about it getting caught on the railing if it has one. Don't want a loaded one bouncing around.

I can see that. I'd argue that you have 100% control over the muzzle while you're doing it though vs having it strapped to your back when you don't even have a hand on it.

I'm just trying to figure out the logic behind leaving the gun loaded all the time. It's tough for me to wrap my head around it because of how I was raised and having a gun go off in my lap once.

Just grabbed a glass of evan williams single barrel 2002 vintage

I carry a revolver on an empty cylinder.

Even if I carried it with 6 in it, I would be less concerned about it than say, a loaded bolt action rifle. With a bolt action, something is holding the sear back, which is spring loaded and trying like hell to hit the firing pin. With something like a revolver or single shot rifle, it isn't spring loaded until you cock it.

I'm cocked and locked at all times with my pistol and my rifle is either in my truck, on my person, or sitting in the stand; it's loaded 100% of the time.

I can't argue with you much...

I don't hunt much anymore, and guess I haven't spent much time on a 4wheeler with a gun, and not too many times in a stand... and don't really recall what I did those times...

but I really never recall unloading or reloading while in the woods... my mindset was to be ready to shoot something...

buying some eggnog seemed like a good idea last week... and I'm thinking I need to have at least my second drink from that $4 bottle before it gets thrown out. not my norm, but i'm thinking a crown and nog while we watch this Eastwood curve ball movie.
