Third And Short

I recall at least two occasions on third and short where Jeremy Hill did not follow the lead blocker and was tackled short of the first down. And on both of those occasions the lead blocker was blocking a man past the first down. As good as Hill is, I don't think he has good vision as a running back. On either of the plays I am thinking about Hill simply crashed into the line behind the center and guard while there were gaping holes at the left tackle.
In any event, Clemson was sending defensive linemen into gaps which is a high risk tactic. LSU's two touchdown runs came when the tactic backfired on Clemson. LSU's failure to make adjustments to capitalize on Clemson's risk taking is a major disappointment. Trying to throw when the linemen were stunting the gaps also played right into Clemson's strength. They had already beaten the pass blocking and were able to pressure Mettenberger. So LSU's play calling increased the effectiveness of Clemson's tactics.

I noticed last night that he is not as patient on those third-and-short runs like he is on first and second downs. He tries to quickly cram in those 2 yards rather than wait and see where the open slots are.

I still would have run him twice and made Clemson stop him. He's hard to stop twice in a row for no gain. He torched them most of the night on just a few carries.
His vision for the opening is great, but he may be a little impatient on the short yardage plays.
We had other options too: Hilliard...Ware (though Ware has struggled with getting yards this year).

Copeland took some strange angles on his blocks also. Just not a good night for the short running game.

I agree with Big EZ, I would have run it twice and made them stop us. How Hill does not have a single touch in the 4th qtr is mind boggling. Granted, we only ran 6 plays, but you gotta go with your strength. If we couldn't carve out two yards in 2 plays then we didn't deserve to win.
