Movies like The Matrix, A New Hope, first Pirates of the Caribbean etc tell a complete story because they were never intended to be part of a series. It was only after those movies became hits that the studio decided to do more.

Well we know that A New Hope was certainly part of a bigger story. These films are absolutely great by themselves. Unfortunately once you become part of a series, every one of them better be a an absolute hit or the original one will tarnish a bit.
The Matrix is probably on the greatest science fiction films ever, but we don't really look back on it like that anymore, just by virtue that Reloaded and Revolutions exist, not to mention an extremely irrelevant and forgettable expanded universe.

It was clear that the Death Star was new, and the Star Destroyer in and of itself tells us everything about the Empire and the Rebellion. The Star Destroyer vs the Rebel Ship shows how large and powerful the Empire is, and weak and small the Rebellion is. The coward angle implies dominance, and the length of the Star Destroyer represents the long reach of the Empire. In fact this shot is so genius that I suspect George Lucas had nothing to do with it, and probably fought against putting it in the final cut.

Aside from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, you can make this argument for any and all franchises.

I'm talking about series that tell one big story. Something like the Bond series is more about the adventures of the main character and not some large story. Most horror series are like that as well.

some of the best arcs in comic happen well after the origin story.
i.e., Kraven's Hunt in Spider-man, The Prison arc in The Walking Dead, The Court of Owls in Batman, etc.

Star Wars was ALWAYS intended to be part of a larger story. Lucas, in the original contract, got the studio to agree to let him make the final two films regardless of box office returns.
