| 2014 QBs- Mason Rudolph/Chase Litton (Posted on 12/30/12 at 1:55 pm)
I see these are the two 2014 uncommitted QBs that LSU has offered. Seeing as LSU has two top flight 2013 QBs in Rettig and Jennings, is a QB a must take in 2014? I looked at the film on these two guys. They both are tall and lanky, especially Litton. Rudolph does not have any rating at the moment, but his film looks better to me. I've seen Litton as the projected commit in mock classes though. Would Litton be seen as a project who may develop 3-5 years down the road? Are there any other QBs who could realistically end up as commits?

Realistically, I'd like to take a QB every year, because you never know how each one will pan out; you don't want to be stuck with a freshman after your starter goes down (a la 2008).

This infinity. If a guy takes over, like McCarron at Alabama, other guys can transfer, but always keep the pipeline moving.

Look at what unfolded in the last few years. 2005 Ryan Perilloux (dismissed) 2006 none 2007 Jarrett Lee 2008 Jordan Jefferson 2009 Chris Garrett (transfer), Russell Shepard (switched to WR) 2010 Zach Lee (MLB draft) 2011 Stephen Rivers, Jerrard Randall, Zach Mettenberger (JUCO) 2012 Jeremy Liggins (did not qualify) 2013 Anthony Jennings, Hayden Rettig Because we didn't take a QB in 2006 (if my memory serves correct, I believe Alex Cate was committed for a long time and flipped to Ok State), when Perilloux was kicked off the team in 2008, we had to go with a RS freshman in Lee, who due to inconsistencies, was replaced by true freshman Jordan Jefferson (and the roller coaster ride that followed between the two). Then, Chris Garrett didn't like his situation and decided to transfer and Zach Lee never made it to campus. Moreover, Russell Shepard didn't pan put at QB. This left us with no real option other than the JJ/JL saga for a few years. Personally, I would like to lock down a QB every year to avoid situations like this. I know instances like Gunner Kiel happen, but we really weren't on him (or any other QB in 2012) until late. I'm all about actively recruiting a QB every year for these reasons.

Yeah, QB recruiting was bad for a while and not taking one in 2004 (different staff I realize) and 2006 was not smart. Hopefully they have it straight going forward. I would definitely take one in 2014

Thanks for the responses guys, I have been a longtime TD lurker and the recruiting board is the best one by a long shot. I think it would be hard to attract someone looking for early playing time in the 2014 class, so that's why I think a guy like Litton who has lots of potential but probably needs a few years would be an ideal take. I agree that at least 1 QB a class should be taken just in case there is attrition. Litton's high school film reminds me a lot of Stephen Rivers. LINK He could definitely use some time to develop arm strength. I like the way he throws on the move. His ball seems to float a bit.

Assuming we red shirt Jennings and Rettig it will be interesting to see you starts in 2014, 1 of those guys or Rivers. A 2014 guy could come in and compete, especially if Rivers winds up the starter, but taking a project is fine, sometimes those guys work out well. Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford were 3*'s.
