RIP to an actor and World War II Veteran

Had a long and distinguished career. Younger folks may recognize him best from his part in "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?"

He was also remarkable for his service:

quote:

He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners.

In later years, he refused to discuss the military service for which he was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

He has too extensive of a resume to list completely but I think he might be best known for his part in "the best little whorehouse in texas"

if he is then it is an uncredited part as best i can tell

scanning through his filmography i think the first really recognizable movie where he had a recognizable part was probably "the sting"

LINK

quote:

In the Parade interview, he recalled the hand-to-hand combat. “I was crossing a field somewhere in Belgium,” he said. “A German soldier ran toward me carrying a bayonet.

He couldn’t have been more than 14 or 15. I didn’t see a soldier. I saw a boy. Even though he was coming at me, I couldn’t shoot.” They grappled, he recounted later — he was stabbed seven or eight times — until finally he grasped a rock and made it a weapon. After killing the youth, he said, he held him in his arms and wept.

RIP Charles.

One of those actors who was never advertised as a reason to watch something, yet always carried his scenes.

Had no idea about his WWII service. Outstanding man.
