spent roughly $40 on packs and sold my 700k coins I worked to get for about $200. Then I made my beast epl team for about 20k

seriously though, I don't know what any of this means what is the best way to start off without spending any real money?
Should I be getting most of my players via the auction house? Or through packs.

when you first start, they give you a free random shitty team. The best thing to do then is play a bunch of games with that team. As you build up coins, look for cheap players in the formation and league/nationality you want in the auction house. Buying packs will almost always be a waste of coins. Right now they have this deal though where you can get a full gold random team for under a dollar i think.

i would just put them up at 200 buy now for 12 hours or a day and hope that 2-4 of them sell, then quick sell the ones that don't get bought. This is assuming there is at least one contract on them (so play 6 games with them and then sell). The only bronze players that are valuable are generally fast, have a good formation (41212, 442, 433, etc.), and/or are in a popular league or nationality.

To the OP (and others): First, find that list of manager tasks. That IS really easy to complete. Get your free gold pack. Take your shite team you have now, play some of the easy tournaments against the computer, and the first couple of seasons against the computer. You'll get 500-600 coins per match. Buy one gold player for 300-350 coins through the auction house after each match. Bank the rest.
Eventually, you'll get enough built up to buy gold packs, sell the players and items you don't need, etc.
Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Thanks for the replies.
Reading this thread has made me realize I'm about 5-10 years too late to ever really get into FUT. This sounds like something I would have been all over in college but with a job and a kid now it seems way too intensive for my limited video game time.
Back to Manager Mode for me.

I'm sure i'd think some of the shite you spend money on is dumb to. Have a good job though and disposable cash. Not on welfare and wasting this kind of money.

I pre ordered the game. Get a free pack every week. Just got lucky with some players. Play the computer tourney a lot until I got a better squad. Now I have an EPL squad and a serie A squad.
