He brought excitement to floor everynight.
and #35 was the two time NCAA player of the year.
if we want the old magic back, we have to another great or 2 come through the program...

The original awesome wer the late 70's and early 80's teams. '81 was the best team in LSU history hands down. And it took Dale awhile to get there. His first 5 years weren't exactly successful. His first year probably the best of those going 14-10, 9-9 with the Hustlers, but the next 4 prett mediocre to even bad.
I don't think you'll ever see it likes of the type of enthusiasm basketball conjured again. College hoops is a different game now and there's so much more to do these days for the general public, not to mention college baseball is so popular here now. It wasn't then and still isn't at most schools.
But it can certainly get better. It takes so much to get folks excited in that building now. The place just oozes with apathy and obligation....folks yawning and texting.

What was disappointing though was that we never could get past the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament with Shaq.

What's amazing is that some of Dale Brown's most accomplished teams were not those with the marquee players. HIs second final 4 after beating Kentucky and the final 8 when we lost to Indiana, were a group of role players who played very good defense. It was his most talented teams that never lived up to expectations in the tournament (excluding his 1st with Macklin, Cook, Martin, etc.)
What was sad though is how often Shaq was fouled. Granted, he couldn't shoot free throws, but that dude was hacked every game with no calls.

That was. I think we got screwed on the seed his last year and had to play Indiana in the second round as a 7. Of course a little underachievement during the regular season was part of that as well.
The Georgia Tech team we lost to his freshmen year was pertty darn good. Lethal Weapon 3 and went to the final four, the only team to give UNLV a game the whole tourney.
But the UCONN loss his Soph year was a pathetic performance vs. IMHO an inferior team. We were poorly prepared and shite the bed on that one.

Saw him a bunch if times and got to play with him once. Used to love seeing him block shots sending the ball to the back of the pmac.

I'm beginning to feel that way as well. With LSU being a "Football school" and the success that the program is having, it's going to to be extremely difficult to achieve a level of enthusiasm for hoops. I do think winning consistently might spark it some though.

I think what is reasonable is that we can get a bigger core fan base with a re-newed enthusiasm. But I think to hope that it will ever to be close to what it was 30 years ago is a pipe dream.
The landscape is so different, and the win and they will come mantra is only half right. More will come yes, but as much as then....probably not even close. Heck we go 14-2 in the SEC in 2006 and had some pretty exciting players on that team and our best crowd of the year was 10K.

LSU had gone 11-5 in conference that previous year and had some studs coming back. Tyrus Thomas was a known commodity fairly early after that UCONN game. Still luke-warm attendance and enthusiasm.
Counter that with Dale who lost 6 times in the first round, including embarrassingly ugly losses with talented teams in '84 and '85. Folks still came in '86.
It just ain't the same these days and it's never going to get back to that level. Folks here are just biding their time until baseball.

I disagree. I loved the '81 squad, but I think the 90-91 squad is the most talented team ever to take the court in the PMAC. Neither squad won a title, but I have to give a talent edge to the latter 90-91 Tigers.

Expectations weren't low that year, they weren't Final 4 but anyone who paid attention was expecting a tourney team.

Oh, sure, that team was loaded with talent. But as a basketball team, there's no question that the '80-'81 team had it all.
It's also a bit unfair to say that they didn't meet expectations in the postseason. When your All-American breaks a finger on his shooting hand while clinching a Final Four berth, that's a pretty big hurdle to get over.

I think overall there's less excitement for the game of basketball around here. Everything is all about football and disposable income will be devoted to football. The Hornets don't draw either even when the team was playoff contender.

Next year's squad will pack the P-MAC. With the recruiting class coming in and the players we have returning next year's team has a chance to win the SEC. Just my opinion. I've witnessed the PMAC rocking long after the 80's teams. Some of you forget that John Brady coached a team with Stromile Swift, Jabari Smith, and Torris Bright. Attendance was extremely high in that Sweet 16 year when those guys lost to Wisconsin in the Tourney. Stay on the wagon peeps. Wins bring crowds! Johnny Jones will get it done!
