Some people develop a develop a sense of protectiveness (not the word I'm looking for, but heck, it's late) over some movies - especially in the sci-fi/fantasy genre.
Heck, there were people on some Star Wars board who would get royally pissed if you said anything negative about the prequels. And I remember a a couple people on theonering.net that always seemed to take it as personal affront if someone said something like Faramir was changed from the book version too much.
It's just part of the lanscape of discussisons regarding these types of movies I think.
