From tipping point, malcom gladwell defines a maven as someone who "people we rely upon to connect us with new information."

Well in my world, this applies to music. Are you the person that introduces your friends to new music? And they look to you for music?

I think many music nerds, which I think is a good bit of the board can act as a music maven. I know I certainly try to introduce my friends to new music. Depending on the peer group, I have mixed results but for the most part its positive. The ones that love music, are usually receptive to it. And they don't know how to get good music.

What about you? Are you the ones that defines the friend playlist? Do people look to you for new music? What are some tips and techniques you have to get people to try new music? I find mix tapes are a great avenue.

I used to be... not so much over the past 5-7 years, I used to get a lot of joy discovering new music and spreading the gospel... the "romanticism" of it has been lost on me...

I still get requests from people every now and then with the general "what are you listening to these days"... often time, texts or e-mails from people scattered over the country...

**I will say back in the day, I would always find a record or something I found so special, I chose to share with no one... stupid, but true...

That is awesome. I'm not sure what it says about you, but its great.

There's a group of friends I have that are always recommending bands and stuff. The issue used to be finding stuff. Now it's sorting through the sheer volume of it.

I think one of the best ways is finding a critic or two you tend to agree with, and looking at their ratings. If they say they like something, and you generally share their taste, its probably worth a listen. Spotify is a godsend for trying out music.

I also love opening acts. If there's a band playing, and you like them, chances are good you will like their opener. Go see them. You can discover some great bands that way (best example for me -- it's how I was introduced to the Head and the Heart, as an opener for the Walkmen)

I use this board. You guys have pointed me to some good bands. I visit often and am appreciative.

really? I love walking into a party and hearing one of my mix tapes, or songs/artists from my mix tape. I get requests for them from a few friends. I make them for my wife, usually once a month or so.

My problem is my friends are slowing losing interest in music as they breed. fricking breeders ruin all the fun.

yeah, this is a fight I have with the wife. My preference would be to see every act playing. She generally only wants to see the headliner.

That's the main reason it's not as much a passion anymore.. I guess it can be likened to the "thrill of the chase"

But also, Im now 41 and have too many other responsibilities.. but somehow find too much time to post here...

I'm kinda the opposite. Having a kid is allowing me to rediscover my favorites and introduce them to her. Mowgli is only seven months old, but she rocks out to Mudhoney, loves the Beastie Boys, and goes to sleep to the National. (Seriously -- if she's acting up, I can pick her up, play Gospel, and she's out before the song is over). Just yesterday we were dancing to A Tribe Called Quest.

My wife is a musician, so she gets pissy when people don't pay proper respect to the opener. They are working musicians, people!

Our tastes are slightly different. I'm far more punk rock and she likes instrumentation, so we tend to lean toward cowpunk bands as a nice middle ground.

Yup, but not as much as I was in college. I still get asked for music suggestions. I will say this too, I have offered suggestions to many people and it's fallen on deaf ears. It definitely works both ways in my case.

I have a lot of music nerd friends as well who constantly text and email me about stuff. I love it.

I am going to bet my friends that are parents would agree with this statement, but the number of shows they will go to is a lot lower. And as those kids get to 3 and 4, the music in the car is dictated by the kids. And then when they hit 7 or 8, they are listening to horrible god awful pop music.

But glad to see you introducing good music to the little lady.

The wife and I do agree on most music though. The only two exceptions are punk, which I like, and folk, which I love. She will only listen to them if I trick her. That works for folk pretty easily but punk is a lot harder.

Yes. But most of my friends are music illiterate so Ill play them a brand new song and theyll hate it, but then hear it at a party and be like "Ohhh shite this is awesome, ive never heard this before!!"

Its a struggle but i bring a new playlist of anywhere from 5-15 new songs in my car almost every weekend.

I didn't get to choose the music when I was 4. Neither will she. But I agree my show attendance has taken a hit. We do festivals (weekend at grandma's!) and maybe go to one show a month as a a good date night. We'll see how long I can stick to my guns.

Yeah, Mrs. Baloo hates hardcore. Can't slip in Minor Threat, but she always surprises me -- she loves the Obits, Cursive, and Op Ivy. So it's not a complete no-punk zone.

My boss's brother used to play drums for them. He's with the Afghan Whigs and Okkervil River now. Good dude.

I know nothing about him but if that's why they parted ways, he must be REALLY hard to deal with, because Cully is the nicest, most laid-back dude ever.
