Why Do Reality Shows Have Staged/Rehearsed Scenes?
Posted by JabarkusRussell on 12/17/12 at 11:20 pm00
It is insulting to the intelligence of the viewer. Do people genuinely think certain scenes are natural? If so, may god have mercy on their souls. For example, on Survivor they just so happen to not capture the scene Boston Rob faints despite the fact they have cameras on them 24/7. Same thing when wild chicken just so happen to be running around their camp when nothing is happening. Survivor is actually one of the more natural reality shows out there sadly.

I love Survivor and Big Brother but I stopped watching Hell's Kitchen because the suspension of disbelief was too much.

If you are watching it's not an insult.

At least with shows like Big Brother there is less fake stuff because its live 24/7. The producers do try to manipulate things during their diary sessions, however.

the worst I saw recently was on Jungle Gold, the robbery scene. I liked the series up until that point.

Hell's Kitchen's challenges ALWAYS end in a tie before the commercial break. ALWAYS!

B/c real life is boring

I think 'Survivor' and 'Big Brother' are technically game shows so there would be severe penalties to CBS if it were discovered anything that would affect the outcome was staged. They certainly do manipulate how events and personalities are portrayed via editing - The "bad" contestant is only shown being "bad" and discussions that would clue people in to surprise votes are cut out.

There have been many, many convos in our 100+ page Big Brother season long threads where people have said that some things are, let's say "nudged" by the producers. One example I remember from this season (this was from the spoiler thread, which I don't read, so I could be somewhat off) was that Frank had to draw names out of a bag for a competition, and the producers called him into the DR just beforehand and gave him the names they wanted in the comp, so he "pulled them out" out of the bag when the time came.

Because reality is boring IRL. It takes hundreds of hours of footage to find enough interesting bits to make a full season. If you stage stuff you cut the amount of time needed to get interesting footage which cuts your production costs which allows you to make more money.

Chumley and the Old Man from Pawn Stars are horrible actors. I swear there is literally a cue card besides the camera that they are reading from.
I saw a rerun of a really early Pawn Stars several months ago. It was before the American Restorations show started. Rick Dale's brother walks in and sells Rick Harrison an old Coke machine. Rick takes it to Rick to have it restored.

They do that because otherwise the shows would be extremely boring and no one would watch.

1.Because people watch them anyway.
2.Because there's the possibility that people discuss their crummy show on bulletin boards or at the water fountain and the people who haven't been sucked in might turn to see what the discussion is all about (the old "any publicity is good publicity" adage).
3.Because they are have the worst writers & production people in the business (Do they still not pay union wages for people working on reality shows?).
It is what it is. Even the people that love the genre admit that.

If they are going to manipulate, at least do is discretely where its not painfully obvious.

If you regularly watch a show starring a Kardashian, intelligence is not an issue.
