You would be the one to add sparkles to your rifle

I dumped my back up sights, because Ill never need them.
But when I did have them I ran Troy Fixed back up sights. None of that flip up bs. Used a Larue M68 mount for my optic and had no issues seeing them in the sight.

Could you explain?

Pat Rogers shifted his view on buis, decided the aimpoint is pretty much indestructible and ditched the buis

Well I dont have a job that requires me to rely on my rifle for my life. If my scope goes down, Ill put the rifle up for the day and shoot a different one. The AR is not the best for home defense, so its in the safe at night. When I had them, I think I zeroed them and then never used them.
Id rather have more ammo, a better trigger, or a better optic.
I see the value for an issued/patrol rifle, just not on my personal gun.

Agree. I pulled mine off when I got my scope. I really just had mine just to shoot till I got the scope.

Are Iron Sights Dead?
This was a timely article I read this morning pertaining to this discussion. Although it mostly covers the use of iron sights as primary aiming devices.

I'm an iron sight guy, too, brah. I'm considering coming into the late 20th Century with something like an ACOG - but I don't even consider a rifle with no iron sights - military shooting ingrains that, I think.

It makes me feel like the old man in the western shooting from the hip. I guess old habits die hard.
The irony is - I believe it was the guys on the Army Marksmanship team back in the 80s and 90s that spurred all this high end equipment coming to rifle shooting matches. And, just like the golf guys, shooters have taken the whole cult of "equipment" thing to the extreme.
Guys were taking deer with iron sights in the 30s at 300, 400 yards. Scopes provide some eye relief and extends your range in certain terrain - but, in Louisiana for example - how often do you have a shot at 400, 500 yards?
Iron sights should be the primary aiming tool on a self-defense weapon - why not on a sporting weapon (and I'm not denying a time and place for optics)?

I'll be sticking with iron sights

I also want to point out that I ALSO took my buis off because the front used to be fixed but changed it for a low profile and now don't have a front. I am too cheap to buy a front one now.

No worries man, it's all about what you like.. I just don't have a purpose for an RCO on my personal, I have one on my issued service rifle. I'm also poor lol

They use iron sights to 600 meters. Even back when 1903 Springfields and M1 Garands were the standard rifles on the line. The SOCOM units are what drive the use of ACOGS and Aimpoints. Now they are using Elcam Specters.

Yeah - now, which I dig, but I seem to recall that experimental period (of course, they may have been following the fashion of the time, but people often grab onto what the military does - just because) - particularly the rimfire guys - it seems like they were the first group to bring humidity gauges and stuff like that to matches - and I'm just guessing that extended to more exotic optics for the time.
That was a long time ago - regardless, they can shoot all my guns better than I can, and blindfolded, probably, iron sights or not.

i know it is probably discussed somewhere in the 500 pages of this thread....
but i just got my first AR (didnt want to start a new thread) and am looking at changing out the fore grip. i want to go with a quad rail. there is no front sight on the rifle, just a flat top rail system in the front because there is a scope mounted.
my question is- would it matter that much if i go with a 2 piece rail or is a floating rail that much better. i read about alignment, but with the front flat rail gas block already on there it seems like alignment wont be an issue.
TIA for the opinions and help.

Do you know if your rifle came with 2 piece handguard or a free floated handguard factory? I don't find it matters much, My Smith has a two piece handguard and it shoots fine. However, I am not looking for competition type precision out of my AR. If that is what you want the free float will be better.
Can you post a pic of your handguard

Being 2 piece has nothing to do with being free float or not.

its the factory 2 piece hand guard that you see on almost all AR's before people make their modifications.
