True, you really wont save anything by assembling yourself.

If you just want an AR, definately buy an upper that is complete.

re: Official AR-15 thread

Building an upper is every bit as easy as building a lower as long as you have the tools. Headspacing is the main thing to be concerned with. They say as long as you are purchasing parts from reputable companies the headspacing should be right on. I bought a set of gauges to be sure, and of the 3 uppers I've built they all are fine.

I will be buying complete uppers at first, if i built them with the speed I'm building my lowers I might get them finished in 2020.

This is the best route to go as most people suggest, as long as you basically just want a complete AR. I was just wanting a very specific set up, so I built from scratch. If that's the case for you as well, I wouldn't let rumors of nightmares assembling an upper deter you.

I want to build to save money and learn more about how the gun operates. I honestly don't know enough about AR's to have a specific setup in mind. I only know that I don't want a handle on top!

Lot of it has to do with what you want. Rail systems bring a significant price jump over traditional foregrips for example. 16" barrel length is the shortest you can legally go without a stamp. If you are wanting the shortest possible, you can get a 14.5" barrel with a pinned 1.5" muzzle device. Then there's carbine or midlength gas system. I'm no expert but I read alot that midlength in the long run is easier on your internals because of less recoil, so I went with that.

Don't think you would save much, if any at all, building your own if your going for upper echelon parts. Hell may even be more expensive And in all honesty there's not much to really learn as far as gun function from building the upper (assuming you purchase a complete bcg).

watch palmetto state they have been having some good deals just watch some come with BCG and charging handle and others do not.

if it comes with a BCG make sure the bolt is carpenter 158 or made out of 9130 steel.

do not buy a bolt made out of 8620 steel, the bolt carrier are all made out of 8620 I believe just dont buy the actual bolt unless its carpenter 158 or 9130(might be 9310).

if you buy a complete upper, are the mounting rails on there? or can you change out what it comes with? this is sorta where I get confused

it seems like that would be pretty easy to change out, but at the same time you've got to be pretty exact i guess

Sometimes, just depends on the manufacturer. I've seen complete uppers with rails and with hand guards.

This. Some manufacturers will give you upgrade options ($100 more and you can get the "Brand X" free float quad rail instead of traditional handguard).

re: Official AR-15 thread

If anyone comes across any deals for uppers, or just other random good deals on stuff please post.

So far I have my LPK (got a PSA one on a good deal) and Stripped lower (spikes) on its way.

So I'll need an upper, stock, probably some other stuff I'm not thinking of too. Not worrying about optics for a while

BCM always has completed uppers, with option for bolt carrier group and charging handle, in stock these days. They make good stuff so they're worth a look.
