I have never posted on this Board before but y'all seem like the most likely help. Just got home from work and went to let my dog inside (he's in the backyard while I'm gone). He was excitedly barking at something under the shed, a possum. here is my question, how effective is "playing possum?" This sucker is laid out on its side, no visible injuries, slight smell, and had a fly land on it while I watched. Are these all standard tricks? I sure don't want to have to fish out a really dead possum and dispose of it....
Thanks.

If you or the dog got too close for it to run, chances are he's acting. Happened a couple weeks ago on my back porch and as soon as I walked away, he took off.

Pretty effective i'd say.

In my younger days I had one trying to steal my bicycle out of the shed, or thats what it sounded like anyway.

I opened the door and he fell over dead, waited about 30 seconds and raised his head up with one eye opened to see if i was still there, then fell over dead again when he realized I was.

We played this game for about 10 minutes before i whacked him over the head with a 7 iron.

Felt like i was in a disney movie or something.

They are very effective when they are like that just grab its tail and carry it off. It won't bite when its playing opossum.

Had one try that with my dog a few weeks ago.

That was a bad strategy all the way around.

My terrier just keeps biting until she has to clear her mouth of fur. It's one of her favorite critters to mess with.

My parents had one that was basically a pet. Had a bad habit of getting into the trash can and then not being to climb back out. Would have to turn it over to let him go. He would waddle off like it was nothing. Always cleaned up the leftover cat/dog food outside. One night during a storm he was right up against the back glass door. Thought he was the cat and opened the door. He hissed and waddled away.

Back on topic, my parents had a mean BMC that would always catch him and carry him around in her mouth. Never shook he though although she would kill a squirrel in a second. Anyway, he would play dead until she got tired of carrying him around. Once she put him down, he would wait a few seconds and start waddling off. At this time the dog would realize that he wasn't actually dead and scoop him back up. This would repeat until either the dog finally got bored or the possum made his escape.
