Just wanted to make you guys aware incase you werent already of a potential danger when ejecting a chambered round from your 1911. Sometimes the round will hang up and the extractor will come into contact with the primer, causing it to fire. This happened to me yesterday afternoon. I was not covering the port and trying to catch the round like this video shows (otherwise Im sure I would have lost a finger) so just please be careful when unloading your weapon. Here is a youtube video that someone posted for me on another gun site to help explain what happened.

And here are some pics of my hand.

I've shot more rounds through a 1911 than anyone I know personally and been around many more people just like me during competitions and have never seen that happen.

Glad you didn't get hurt too seriously. What were you doing when that happened?

Unloading it. I dropped the mag, racked the slide to remove the chambered round and BOOM.

I've heard of it happening but have never seen it. Be careful and never try to catch a live round with your hand when clearing it.

I wasnt trying to catch it. Like I said above, if I was covering the port with my hand trying to catch the round, I probably would have lost a finger.

I'm confused as to how you have those injuries then? If you racked the slide to eject the chambered round correctly and presumably wearing safety glasses when shooting there would have been no injury.

I'm assuming you mean the ejector?

Glad to see you just got cut up a bit and didn't lose a finger. This is bizarre. I've never seen that happen before.

Horrible designed weapon that should be thrown on the ash heap of history already.

And "that design is unreasonably dangerous." (quote from a resident handgun guru, albeit about a different pistol).

Is this a design issue with the 1911, or could it happen with all firearms? I try to catch the shells whenever I unload any weapon. Is it a safety hazard to do so?

It can potentially happen with all centerfire cartridges. Never catch a live round by placing your hand over the ejection port
