Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday at the NFL's owners meeting that the league would spend the next few months exploring playoff expansion.

"Of course, something that we discussed in the past is expanded playoffs. That is something that we teed up (at the meeting Wednesday)," he said. "We will probably be looking at it with the committee over the next several months. Right now, we are at 12 teams, obviously. We will look at probably 14 or 16. The committee will be looking at that."

In the current format, adopted in 2002 after the NFL added the Houston Texans and realigned the league into eight four-team divisions, 12 teams make the playoffs -- eight division champions and two wild cards in each conference.

The NFL has had 12 teams qualify for the postseason since 1990 when it expanded the field from 10, adding a third wild card in each conference as well as the three division champions.

The number of Super Bowls won recently by a #5 or #6 seed gives this legitimacy.

They'll be playing flag football anyway, so safety isn't really an issue.

Seriously, though, why even have a regular season any more in pro sports. Just make everything a double elimination playoff from the start. Might as well, that's where it's headed.

The 12-team format is perfection. Exceptional teams are rewarded for regular season excellence with 25% fewer games to a title and home fields, and the less successful playoff teams remain capable of running the table.

It's not hyperbole anymore, Goodell is on the path to destroying the game.

Not to mention 1 bye week can already knock a team out of rhythm. 2 byes could be argued a net negative.

Seems to me that 7 team would mean only 1 team gets a bye, and with 8 team, no byes

Exactly, I like the current format as is, reward for winning the division and the 2 best remaining teams take the wildcards.

teams shouldn't quit cause home field advantage and seeding advantage would be very important.

This frickface won't be satisfied until his shite covered thumb print has smeared the entire landscape of the NFL as we know it.

Me to Goodell:

You have already started the dismantling of football as we know it so go ahead and kill it sooner than we thought you would

I've got my Sundays in the fall back, thanks Rog
