WR Jeff Greene leaving Ga. Tech
Posted by togar tiger on 12/13/12 at 8:36 am00
Their top WR. 6-foot-4, 210 pounds. Should have 2 years remaining. Would be nice to get another big guy.

somehow Calvin Johnson came out of that school...although they probably threw it a little bit more then IIRC

after megatron, demaryius thomas, and maybe stephen hill, i will never question the ability/potential of a GT receiver ever again.
This. I would take this kid in a heartbeat just because he plays that same role they did

I would argue that their pure triple option QBs they have now are better passers than what Megatron had while he was there (Reggie Ball).

ball is still an anomoly to me. as a four year starter i think he had a career completion percentage < 50%.

I wouldn't argue with you...I don't follow them closely. I just know they have been running that offense for a while.

My question is...what did he really think he was getting himself into? Or does this not have anything to do with getting touches?

Yeah, Johnson's Jr year (his last year) he had 76 Receptions for 1202 Yds (15.8 avg) and 15 touchdowns.

Paul Johnson got there the year after CJ left

If by "go look up" you mean "look up a few posts" then ok. It's already been mentioned multiple times in this thread that CJ had Reggie Ball, the worst four year starting QB in NCAA history.

I thought Johnson got there the year before CJ left?? I could be wrong I'm younger but I thought since he was coming everyone was surprised CJ was staying and not entering the draft.
Any ways Reggie ball sucked big time

It doesn't require much quarterbacking with defenses focusing on stopping the run and Calvin Johnson running deep. Ball just had to close his eyes and toss the football on the same side of the field that Johnson happens to be roaming.

Yeah.. completely different offense. It'll take a herculean effort by their next coach to transition GT back into a modern offense

how the F do they recruit with that 2A high school offense? why would anyone worth a shite on offense go there?
re: WR Jeff Greene leaving Ga. TechPosted by brewhan davey on 12/13/12 at 11:04 am to dallastiger55
Offenses like that thrive on quintessential team players; most of the time they will pick up residual talent, such as linemen that are too small for pro style offenses (this works in a triple option, flexbone-style offense, because the blocking scheme is completely different; a lot more angled blocks, combos and cut blocks, so that size isn't as much of a requirement), running backs and receivers that are willing to block and sell their fakes on plays they don't get the ball, and quarterbacks that are more of an athlete than a passer.
Recruiting for that offense is very, very specifically tailored to certain types of players.

If you are really good WR GT still gets you the ball. That's why I would be skeptical on this guy. If he's transferring it probably means he doesn't block very well (which is big for us) or wasn't good enough they wanted to throw it to him.
Hill might have had only about 30 catches last year but had over 800 yards receiving...and was a high draft pick. Dont forget Demaryius Thomas too.
While obviously GT wants to run the football, WRs still get plenty of downfield chances in that offense. Sometimes more so than many other offenses because the way the triple option works is you run run run run then go deep.
