Likely a .45, and I really like the Kimber's. No need for a custom job. What does the OB say is the best 1911 on the market?

I like Kimbers but you will get a much more "professional" opinion once King Ranch strolls in.

best bang for your buck right now in my opinion is the Ruger 1911
100% made in America and can be found in the 650-799 range.
You won't find a US made 1911 in that price range thats not used.

I would look for a Series 70.
Probably do not want the Series 80 firing pin block.
SA has better internal parts than Kimber.
Jims in BR has a really good selection of 1911s.
Collectors Firearms in Houston has the best selection of new/used 1911s I have ever seen or heard about.
Lots of reviews here:
SA Loaded Review
Wilson Combat $$$$$
Kimber Crimson Pro Carry
Ruger SR1911
Kimber Tactical Custom
Price is likely going to be your greatest determining factor.
You can google the heck out of 1911 reviews as well.
Last week at Jims, the guy behind the counter did not recommend a Kimber. FWIW. SA was his choice.
The best 1911 armorer in Houston area recommends the GI SA for modifications and customizations.

My nephew the gun nut keeps raving about the Rugers, looks like a fine gun but I've heard they are kinda getting hard to find.

So your looking for a Kimber 1911 in a .45? Kinda answered your own question hoss.
I looked at a Browning 1911 pistol in .22 yesterday. Looked like it'd be fun as hell to shoot, but really nothing more.

I agree that the Ruger is the best deal on the market right now. The only low when compared to the others is that it's got a cast frame instead of forged. But if anyone knows how to do casting right, it's Ruger. They've been doing it the best for the longest time.
Most of the "series 80" 1911s out now shoot really well too, but I'm of the opinion that the "series 70," which is devoid of a firing pin block, has the smoothest trigger.
That said, Kimbers are great and you really can't go wrong with one. If you get one that has a few bugs, call Kimber and they'll fix it for you. And it's an American made product.
Here is my S&W 1911 before and after I modified it. Personally, I think it's one of the best looking 1911s on the market and I am a huge fan of the M&P-type serrations it has on the slide. I'm also a fan of the external extractor, which some may scoff at. It hasn't failed on me and it has a longer lifespan than the internal extractor.
And here it is next to my friend's Springfield Operator, also a great 1911 choice, and also American made.

those smiths are nice for sure, have gotten the chance to shoot a couple.
I have a couple of SA's but the Ruger will be next on my list.

Bapple has a gorgeous SW1911.
I'm a snob so I say get a Nighthawk, Wilson, Volkmann, etc.

Price range?
Up to $2000. No need for anything more than that. Anyone here have one of the Rugers? They look good but I wonder how reliable they are. That S&W is a damn nice looking gun.

A Volkmann or a Brown in my opinion.
What are you looking to do with it?
You want a 4" or 5" barrel?

Pretty sure KR has a ruger. You could get two for $2000.
