Well nothing short of an amendment to the state constitution (or the elimination of redundant fourth-tier directional schools and HBCUs) is going to have that kind of significant impact on the budget of LSU.

This. We've been saying this for a long time and nothing has changed.

Saw an article earlier this week where Tenn. was stopping their $6 million contribution from the AD to the university for the next 3 years in an effort to shore up the athletic department I guess.

I guess the story is don't get too dependant on it.

I hope the majority of this money goes to actual academic use as opposed to things such as "administrative costs" and the sort.

LSU is a school that needs a better academic reputation. It should be the goal of the University to break the Top 100.

so you would continue to let the university die?[/quote]

LSU admin should turn to the Stanford Business school and ask for an evaulation/plan to make money. If anyone thinks that LSU or most schools are edjumakiting students ...well lookie here I gotsa a bridge.

How many get degrees in General Studies..etc..worthless in the real world. Look under any job site and see if LSU is graduating enough or training enough to get A JOB.

kinda the purpose right, besides tapping sluts/doing blow...which you can do better/more with a job

prevent defense: Yes, I know not all degrees worthless at LSU - no shite.

But if something is not working- find a plan and just do it for Christ's sake...

So it's a college professor's job to turn a profit for the university? Oh, sorry, my mistake. I always thought it was to educate students in the not-for profit environment that a state university is supposed to be set up to be.

While I understand what you are saying, TA is making a valid point that the University should pursue better methods of overcoming the budget shortfall instead of effectively raping LSU Fans..

Their funding is being cut by the state but they are not allowed to charge what they want for tuition. To make up the difference you either cut people, close programs/departments or you accept money from athletics. This is no different from what is going on at every school around the state.

If the bill to allow universities to bring tuition up to the southern region averages passes you will start to see our universities thriving again.

This will trickle down to your pockets eventually as your kids will be paying more for tuition.

Pick your poison

My question about the money is this: Where does the rest of the "profits" go?

It says that the AD is giving 45% of the PROFITS to the university academic side. I would assume that is net profits. Which would also lead one to assume that ALL expenses for the athletics were taken out before the split.

IF that is the case, why is it only 45% and where does the other 55% go if all athletic expenses were paid before the split?

Not flaming, just wondering what goes on with profits from those who might really know.

Officials from BR to Washington have forgotten how to control themselves and not spent money they don't have.

Everyone, well most people, know how to do it when it's their own money. But somehow when it's other peoples money they are responsible for, they spend like 'drunk sailors' and go crazy.

What is it going to take for these people to learn to not spend money the do not have?

I would have to assume that the money is saved for capital projects or if they have to fire a coach. :)

I am sure it is reinvested in the department some kind of way.

It's great that LSU (Athletics) is in a position to help LSU (Academics). However, one of the potential problems I see is that all (public) universities in Louisiana are facing budgets shortfalls and cuts, and not all have a profit generating athletic dept. to get extra funding from. What happens when the UL's, McNese, NSU, etc. complain that it's unfair that their schools have to make cuts while LSU is supplemented by the athletic dept.? It's feasable that the legislature will look to send more tax dollars their way (away from LSU). LSU will then become reliant on the supplemental fuding from the AD for their annual budget, not just a temporary life-line in a tough economic climate.
