Everyones favorite ethnic prezident....

Not hardly his fault.

I believe it's the result of a long ago deal struck with the railroads, if I'm not mistaken.

There is a powerplant in Utah that is the same way. A coal fired plant smack in the middle of a natural gas field. There are literally thousands of natural gas wells around the power station.

It's funny how they have that pic for Houston (a place with a nice enough downtown area, where the refineries are located a pretty good distance from the main part of town), and then include what is actually a decently nice pic of BR (when the refineries are located DIRECTLY BEHIND the vantage point of the picture and immediately adjacent to downtown).

It's a huge pain in the arse and definitely not going to be any time soon. Especially with all the new shite that's come from Fukushima. TVA had all kinds of issues refurbishing BFN U1 a few years ago (before Fukushima) and is having a ton of trouble finshing U2 at WBN. Major cost overruns and delays. TVA's completion of WBN U1 in the 90s was the last new unit to come online. Basically the government has been the only recent successful organization to finish a plant in recent history and they started building that plant in 1973.

Vogtle's AP1000s will be the real big test. Newer modern Westinghouse design, not old tech like TVA's plants. The first unit out of the two is suppose to come online in 2016. We will see...

I am interested to see if Modular Nuclear Units will get off the ground. Suppose to be a ton safer and much much smaller footprint.

Refineries are to Baton Rouge and Houston as automobile companies are to Detroit.

Standard Oil/Exxon is partially responsible for putting Baton Rouge on the map 100 years ago. Nothing to be ashamed of that they are still around and doing well.

Oh, I agree. The biggest boost came around the time of WWII, when they really ramped up a lot of production at that plant.

It is a bit unfortunate, however, how close it is situated to the downtown area.

I always found Baton Rouge cleaner than NOLA or Lake Charles.

Houston is on this list. How many people live in that area?

For Baton Rouge to be as big as it is and to be the state capital, there isn't JACK shite to do there other than LSU.

Shreveport and Alexandria have better airports for Christ's sake

I kind of like it. It looks cool lit up at night, but I'm probably in the minority.

All of the skyscrapers came after the refinery, including the capital building.

No.

Alexandria only has 3 connecting locations linked by puddle jumpers, and that is with no regional competitors.

Baton Rouge is practically next door to both MSY and LFT and still had over 100,000 more enplanements every year than Shreveport....it completely dwarfs Alex's airport.

I've covered this before.

Life is what you make of it. There's plenty to do in Baton Rouge. You can get out and enjoy it or you can sit around all year waiting for football to start. If you choose not to build a life for yourself, don't blame it on the rest of the city.

I live outside Memphis....a city at the bottom of every meaningful quality of life measure. I'm happy here because I want to be.

This. New Orleans has been repeatedly, famously called "dirty" throughout its long history.

I find it hard to believe there are 13 cities that are dirtier than BR.

Good question.

We ship our cleaner natural gas up north, they ship their nasty coal down here for us to choke on.

Once a coal plant is built it is cheaper to run than a natural gas plant

Coal plants cost a ton of money to build

Once you start connecting the dots on this..it's pretty clear that once a coal plant is built, that bitch is going to be running 24/7 no matter what.

You should do some research and check out "load duration curves" and "screening curves" to get a more technical understanding of what I'm talking about.

Or to put it more bluntly, if coal plants exist in your area, it's likely that they meet a huge portion of regional energy demand. If they shut down, that demand has to be met by other generation methods, all of which are more costly.

It makes some sense given the ease in which to ship fuel down river. Seems weird having coal way down there, but it is an abundant and cheap fuel.

BTW, looks like NRG is going to retrofit this particular plant to clean it up at a cost of $250 million plus mandatory fines.

Natural gas is cheap now but that is not always the case. The price of coal does not fluctuate as much as the cost of NG, therefore it was much more desirable to build coal plants in the past.

A lot of people thought the cost of electricity going up after Katrina/Rita was because of the damage to electrical infrastructure, but it was also because the cost of NG had skyrocketed and most of Entergy's plants run on NG which is normally at a more reasonable price.

calif got hammered on the list. Not surprised with their water issues. It's not a complete list without Memphis, Toledo and Birmingham(city not the metro)
