re: Ignorant UK Campus Cops caught on video violating civil rights

quote:

I never said they were all GOOD cops. Just only 1 BAD cop, who was outwardly acting beyond the scope of his duties. I've had plenty of cops just be rude to me. But do you deny, as the cops here are admitting to, that cops have a tendency to be rude/short to people sometimes?

Well you're the one who tried to say they act like that in all situations. Of course there are the rare instances they're rude. But what you ignore is the thousands of times they aren't for every one that is rude. No one seems to are about all the good interactions. So no of course I don't say there aren't instances where they are rude. But any idiot, except for you, cpt, and others apparently, knows that that is rare and not the norm.

quote:

I'm making no claims regarding their effectiveness as police officers, only how they deal with the public and only how certain situations can be helped by non-escalating speech.

Again, you seem to disregard the much more common positive interactions to make your stupid argument. People aren't perfect, and shitty interactions happen in all walks of life everyday. That doesn't mean you need to whine about the entire profession, yet for cops that seems to be exactly what you do. Shut up already.

I don't diagree with most of your post but that does not change the fact that it is a reality.

Oh, I never argued that what I was advocating was based in reality. I was saying what I thought SHOULD happen with cops. But I don't think it'll ever happen. If anything, things are getting worse and worse, day by day. People do not trust the police. And the police do not trust the people.

quote:

I also assure you that soldiers do not have a cheery view of the enemy, or many times, even the people they are helping.

And I'm just saying that, even if you don't like someone, you can be civil. Even if you don't trust someone, you can be civil.

This situation where cops are sometimes rude during a traffic stop because they don't know who they might be dealing with...I forgot who brought it up originally, but does being rude help them determine whether or not someone's a threat?

But to suggest that cops shouldn't investigate something based on an eyewitness account is just silly.

Sorry. Just applying cop-apologist logic.

no, but since you highlighted them as handling the situation and treating people better, i wanted to point out the fact that there are bad apples in EVERY profession. not exclusive to cops.

Yes indeed, I feel ANY reported crime that isn't investigated is a tragedy.

Just think if those cops had looked a little closer at Jeffrey Dahmer the first time someone made a report about him or if the FBI agents had looked a little closer at what Mohammed Ata was up to in the summer of 2001.

And ditto you're comment about learning to read people. I can watch a kid interact in a classroom and just about tell you the kind of work his parents do for a living, what kind of home life he has; and can usually tell when they're lying, etc. I can't be definitive, to be sure, but right far more often than not.

Sure. What's your basis for challenging the veracity of the report they received?

There's an inherent chance that some will misuse the system like you state, but that's no reason to discount the entire system anymore than saying that because one nut job kills someone with a gun we need do something about guns.

I'd just like more corroboration before things like this happen. We are a country based on having and protecting civil liberties, however trivial they may seem. It just seems morally objectionable, to me, to allow seedy elements of society (oftentimes felons) so much power to wield influence.

So in my example, get a tip? Okay, great. Carry out surveillance. Sit on the house. Look for what would align with drug movement. Don't get the warrant that day, fail to get a proper profile of the family - being completely unaware that children even lived there, and bring an actual SWAT team in.

I know none of my ideas/thoughts will ever amount to any actual change. It's just discouraging to me that, should some girl I dumped 3 years ago decide she doesn't want me to get married to my fiance, she could just claim that I raped her or something. Or that I was a drug dealer. Will I go to prison absent of evidence? No. Will my life, likely, be significantly impacted if they only go off of her word? Absolutely.

It is what it is. An imperfect system. I'm just thinking out loud.

I brought it up and there is a difference between being brusque and wary and being rude.

No one should be treated rudely by police , but on the other side of that coin I have yet to see you admit that there are people who claim that they were treated rudely etc by police and upon investigation it turns out that THEY were the problem, not the cop.

This would cover 99% of instances that CptBengal posts, since he absolutely believes cops should just take whatever is dished their way.

No, you don't have to be rude to someone just because you don't know if they are dangerous or not, but you can't afford to be all friendly with them either.

Similar to the Godfather, it isn't personal, it's only business. They are doing what they can to make sure they and those they interact with get to go home to their families.

People are crazy a-holes and most of the time cops see the worst in people .

Cops don't write laws or make rules. If you have issue with these things you need to elect new legislators. Do you understand how government works?

I figured as much. Pretty civil debate here, all-in-all, unlike most of the others of similar theme.

I'm scared shitless of this - some kid making false accusations against me to get back for bad grade or something - so I take precautions to make sure I'm covered: I cc my boss when emails come in that might be remotely related to this subject; I archive all communications; I refuse to be alone in a room with a student without having the door open, I don't frequent bars and clubs frequented by the student-age population, and so forth.

Of the people I've seen get screwed by false accusations, the only ones permanently damaged by them were the morons who hadn't taken sensible precautions beforehand and left themselves at risk for the allegations. That you have to do that sucks, but it's reality.

no idea. cliffs?

ETA: i don't think hearsay of someone pouring alcohol (as if they could tell) out of a window is grounds to search without a warrant.
