It's a factor for the selection committee. Have you seriously never heard of it before?

It's almost solely used for NCAA Tournament selection purposes. It pretty much boils down to how tough a team's schedule was, and how they performed against those teams. It makes who you play important instead of just wins and losses.

What in the hell is RPI?
A formula that calculates how good you are based on your schedule and your opponents' schedules. It is used heavily in determining who gets into the tourney and their seeding.

By adding teams like Tulane, who are terrible in basketball, the basketball-focused schools are going to lose some points in their RPI - so they mad.

Now I understand. I clearly do not watch college basketball at all.

i don't watch any college basketball.

FWIW, you may hear the term "RPI" come up again in conversations in late spring regarding baseball. Don't listen to it - it is just other posters messing with you.

So is UMass the only FBS football program in that group?

why do some of you think UMass would want to join a bball only conference when they just moved up to FBS?

Which is a stupid and shortsighted point of view.

Tulane has been good in basketball in the past and has just shown a commitment to its basketball program, which means that we can and will be good again.

Sports teams and programs are not static.

I honestly think there are people in this thread that don't realize that UMass is FBS, and that some of the other schools even have football at all.

Isn't it kind of hard to say you're upset with Tulane, currently pouring 100 million into sports, when Seton Hall and DePaul are around?

If Tulane will be pouring 100 million into sports everyone involved in making that decision should be drawn and quartered.

How high do they want their tuition to go? 60K a year?

About $40 or so mil of that is for the on campus stadium and is all from donated money, as are most of their capital improvement projects. If they can get the funding privately and significantly upgrade their situation, what is the issue?

Would be a damn solid bball conference and one of the worse football conferences in America.

Any school in that conference with a football team plays on the FCS level. Some with and some without scholarships. However they compete would dictate what football conference they compete in, as it currently does.

Georgetown and Villanova do not compete in the same football conference because Villanova offers football scholarships and Georgetown does not.

Just mentioned on PTI that the Big East basketball schools and the Atlantic 10 are considering a merger with 21 schools? That would be crazy!

while they are catholic schools, they also do not play football. i think they want out but the exit fees are huge so they are scheming to dissolve the league and no one pays exit fees. imo, if they have a little patience they will get their wish.
