But, being overly emotional and making a call in a player's face does nothing to resolve the issue.

Like hell it doesn't, he threw the guy out on the spot...issue resolved.

It will make those players think twice about throwing a tantrum though. Now big tough NBA star got embarrassed by an old little white guy. Thats why it took him so long to walk after the ref. He knew he was in the wrong right away. But then he thought about his "cred" and had to act like he was going after him. He had no intention of doing anything until his teammates held him back. He's a child with low self esteem and needed to look tough.

Amir Johnson was retarded. But, I will say this. Referees need to be punished for losing their temper in like fashion that players are punished. The ref turning to Johnson's face to throw him out was uncalled for. He was essentially taunting him and is lucky he didn't get punched in the head. He should've walked over to the scorer's table and signaled the technical foul and the dismissal.

Yeah, I don't agree with any of that.

I don't think the ref did anything wrong in that situation.

what is the point of a referee getting in a player's face and throwing their arms in an exaggerated manner in order to expel the player from the game?

By the rules, the referee communicates fouls, technical fouls, and ejections to the scorer's table.

Doing so in the player's face is a show. It is retarded. Just like umpires in baseball making a big display about calling someone out. Just like soccer refs running over and shoving a red card in a players face.

The umpires/referees job is not to show his authority or stand up to a player. His job is to umpire or referee the sport. He can do so without losing his cool because he got offended.

Honest question: Would you be cool with every police officer that gives someone a speeding ticket being a complete jerk to the person? Maybe even jumping out of his police cruiser and making absurd hand motions while writing the ticket?

this is how a ref should handle a technical foul

And he can't do this if the players are challenging him on every call

why not? just keep making the calls

They blow fouls and point 1 arm up 1 in direction of foul...then run over to table to say who it was on.
Thy don't just blow a whistle and talk only to table.

Slackhouse is either trolling or he really is pissed off that the referee didn't run away like a scared child to the scorer's table to call the foul, thus ensuring that the players have no respect for him and allowing the game to get out of control, which ultimately only hurts the players (figuratively and sometimes literally).

My guess is the latter, because he's had an official that he felt he was treated badly by and can sympathize with the player wanting to take a swing at him because he wanted to do the same. With that kind of attitude toward authority, my guess is you've had some issues with this that have negatively affected your career/life because you're not intellectually capable of understanding the reason for an authority figure's actions.

My money is on low-level salesman. Maybe a novice in pushing drugs on doctors in a clinic or an insurance salesman--or one of those prior to getting axed for being a dumbass towards his boss for what he thought was unfair treatment?

How close am I? Don't answer that, because I'm sure you'll just lie and talk about how you're an investment banker with a fleet of Ferrari's like every other OT'er around here.

if he ejects the player, how does the game get out of control?

I have a job in the Information Technology field. I've never been fired for a job, and never shown any boss disrespect. I've also never been treated unfairly because I'm not an a-hole.

I just think it is retarded for referees to have exaggerated actions. It does absolutely nothing. It gives them no further authority over the players. It doesn't help keep the game out of control. Technical fouls, ejecting a player, and coaches/teammates/security personnel keep the game from getting out of control.

Again, it is the referees job to call the game. He's already been given that authority. There is zero reason for them to act in this manner. Well, except for pride.
