I'm a couple months away from realy watching regular season basketball but some of you must be watching their team lurch to a 9-12 start with two of the best players in the NBA.

What's your take? New system and just takes time? DH is over-rated and/or inflexible? Too many old players? D'antoni just doesn't place enough emphasis on defense (his system will not win a championship?

No Nash and Gasol is definitely killing them.

I haven't watched much of their games but our bench sucks from what I've seen. Gasol and Nash not playing with our shitty bench is hurting us.

Didn't it take the Heat a little while to get going their first year?

Plus.. they are getting killed by injuries. They will make the playoffs and be a hard draw for any of the top 4 in the west

Outside of firing Dantoni and hiring Phil, they should trade Kobe if they can't get the ship righted by the trade deadline. Of course they'll never trade him, but he is a terrible teammate and Howard will not want to play with Kobe another season.

Moving Duhon and Jamison to the bench will help down the line, and I think Jodie Meeks could be real solid for them down the line this season.

Trading Kobe would be a terrible idea. The fans would be pissed. Kobe is just as good of a teammate as Jordan.

If they aren't competing for championships then it would be a terrible idea to keep him. His salary cap # is enormous.

Which is why he won't be traded.

Jordan was a horrible teammate, but he was clearly the best player in the NBA. Kobe is not the best player in the NBA.

All of this. Plus you would be trading one of the greatest players in your franchise's history.

Defense and turnovers.

Last night, there were 6 NBA games played.

The Lakers had the top scorer, (Kobe's 34 points), top rebounder, (Dwight's 16 boards), and top assist man, (Duhon's 11 assists), out of all the games played last night and they still lost by 7 points at home

IYO are those going to improve?

Obviously the system and coach have a lousy reputation on defense but with Nash back maybe they turn into the Suns and start outscoring more people?

Kobe Top 5?!?!? HAHAHAHAHA. Reputations die hard apparently. The guy does not defend anymore. He'll blow an assignment or let a guy blow passed him, and then proceed to yell at his teammates for not helping. It's awful. He's a large part of why their defense is atrocious at times. They are getting torched in the 4th quarter lately.

Also, there is no equivalency between this Lakers start and the Heat's start in 2010.

They have the cancer known as Mike D'Antoni. They're getting what they deserve.

First and foremost, missing two of your four best players is tough to overcome. Other than that:

- no team defense
- players are lost in the offense
- no one can run the pick and roll outside of Nash
- poor FT shooting

I think the turnovers will obviously improve once (if) Nash comes back. The Defense is a major issue. They have no perimeter defenders outside of MWP, and his skills are so diminished that it's just not enough. Dwight can only do so much to protect when all the perimeter players are getting blown by.

Recently in the 4th, they've given up 29 to the Jazz, 34 to the Rockets, and 40 to the Magic. That just shouldn't happen.

The inconsistency that they play with on defense is confounding. Sometimes they look dominant, and others they are horrid. But the horrid play tends to be at the end of games for whatever reason.

In this short season so far, who would you put above him besides Lebron and Durant?

He is third in VA and EWA, fifth in PER (Davis only has 6 games, so that is pretty irrelevant and Duncan does not offer the same amount of minutes, despite his great efficiency), first in PPG, shooting at 48.2% clip, hitting 39.8% from deep, and averages 37.4 mpg.

You are just trying to disprove Kobe lovers and overcompensated by attacking his defense, but there is no doubt that he is still among the best in the league. Offensively, he is the third-best player in the NBA so far this season.

Kobe's defense has definitely declined, but I do not think it would remove him from the top 5, since he is third offensively speaking in the NBA. What is your top 5 based on the current season?
