We'll go with the last 10 recently played songs. It will be the soundtrack to my reading of this thread.

Diana Ross and the Supremes - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me
Cake - The Distance
The Psychedelic Furs - The Ghost In You
Del Shannon - Runway
Don Henley - The End of the Innocence
Offspring - Gotta Get Away
The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
The Shins - New Slang
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World

Shuffle's doing a number on me today.

808Bass,

You've done some skiing in your past, hey? I bet you're no stranger to snow.

I gotta say, the deadmau5 crowd that I know is afraid of the slopes... a lot easier to pop their roll.

Hey, I'm not knocking this. Just making an educated assumption.

I've always preferred short skis to long skis. However, I haven't skied for quite a while. I won't turn down a nice ski trip though...

I like Kaskade more than Deadmau5.

And, as boring as it may be, I don't ski or roll. Never have. Good hydration is always a good idea, health wise. But not a necessity for me.

Just a frustrated pianist with an addiction to beats.

I'm just messin with ya. I like Deadmau5. I'm sure you can appreciate the attempted link between the two though.

I play piano and love a good beat too.

I've thought about buying a Korg. Have you used a Korg? What type of beat/sampling machine would you suggest?

Seriously, youtube The Presets' song "Ghosts". What is the machine that the beat guy uses in that video?

I've also seen some very cool video of people tearing up this machine:

What is the make and model of this machine? Ultimately, the machine in the picture is what I want.

Okay, players....here is your assignment. Listen to 3 - 5 songs listed in this thread that you're unfamiliar with. Once you're finished sampling the new songs, provide a quick critique of the songs - good or bad.

This thread is to expand our horizons. If our ultimate goal is to be the hippest most badass fanbase in the SEC, we need to start with culture reform.

And the starting point is thru musical taste.

I can certainly appreciate the link.

I have only bought Korgs and Yamahas, and given the choice would choose a Korg every time. I like their sounds and the voice architecture makes the most sense to me when programming. (Though I do have an old Roland Juno-106 that I won't part with).

The Korg KRONOS is an unimaginable machine, but it comes at an unimaginable price. The TR and M models are more reasonable with many of the same sounds and capabilities. The M3 88 will be my next purchase.

As far as beat boxes go, I've got a Roland MC 303, a Korg Electribe, an old Yamaha RX box, an Alesis HR-16 (?) and a Novation Launchpad MIDI interface for Ableton Live. And I've got a dandy little iPhone app from Native Instruments called iMaschine which is a fun little sketch pad.

The box in your picture is a Maschine Mikro by Native Instruments. It's a crazy good little interface, but that's really all it is with the backing of some great sample libraries from Native Instruments. I prefer more machine control and not running a computer from the interface. An Akai MPC 60 (of some iteration) or a Roland MC 808 or 909 would be what I'd get before a Maschine. But I still play and sequence on the in-keyboard sequencers, too. So take it FWIW.

Not sure the machine the cats are playing in that video. It's nothing all that standard. It could be something retro like the TR909 or a Redrum or something. Liked the sea chanty feel of it.
