Thinking of switching to a baitcast reel

I've been using a spinning reel my whole life, but I'm tired of trying to flip the bail in mid air in order to get my cast on point.
Anyways, thinking about getting one for Christmas. Don't know what the best bang for my buck is. Strictly saltwater fishing in southeast Louisiana. Not sure if I should get a low profile one or not and I was looking at some Shimanos. Any help would be appreciated. Looking to spend $100-150. TIA.
Also, I've always used my left hand to reel, but I notice its most common for baitcast to be right handed (i think). Should I get a right handed one or try to find a left handed one?

Dear Mr.Klump,
I don't know anything about new reels or even saltwater. However, I have been using Ambassadeur 5000's and 6000's for more years than I would like to admit. For the money and reliability, I could only recommend these reels... Some might consider me "ole fashion" though..

Shimano are good, I think the Chronarch is now made with all plastic, more than your price range though. In that range I would probably go with Abu Garcia Revo S or SX.
I always just grab the line with the finger I release with, works well for me.

Seriously though dude,if you're really wanting to make the switch please do yourself a favor and get some good shite so you won't be struggling with backlash.
Mu Curado is set so clean that I don't really have to even thumb the spool till the bait hits the water. I have m 8 year old girl throwing it
What kind of fishing are you going to be doing?

My first real fishing reel was a 5500, pops bought it for me when I first got into bass fishing. I still have it, and it still works like the day I bought it. I just don't throw it as often as I used to, until recently it stayed on my flipping stick. Reel is probably 15 yrs old.

ty for reminding me about the 5500's, have those too, I forgot...
Something like Ugly Sticks and ole fashion, round Ambassadeurs are hard to beat...

First fishing trip I used it on, I think my farthest cast went 10 ft, A-hole friend decided that it would be best if I learn how to pick a lash than show me how to set the brakes. Needless to say, I have never come across a backlash that I can not get out.

I reel left handed with spincast and right with baitcast.
I only use shimano calcutta 200's. Its what I started with and see no reason to change. They run about $180. There are plenty of good reels that will fall in your price range though.

exactly how mine is, same with the my new chronarch and lew's speed spool
and OP look at lew's reels. i like it WAY better than my chronarch and curado. so smooth
and if its for saltwater, the calcutta's are awesome like trout said

Invest the time and make the jump. A spinning reel should not be used unless your throwing something under 1/8 oz or free spooling something when fishing vertical. Any other application, the baitcaster is better IMO.
Second on the Revo's. Damn good reels.

If you ever get into a quality low pro baitcasting combo, you will like them just as much.

Legit reel.
I'm getting one for Christmas and putting it on a Cashion Microguide rod.

Trout and reds, mostly out of lafitte/port sulphur/empire. All up and down that area.
I was looking heavily at the Curado. I saw the G series didn't have the best reviews, but I don't want to drop $250 on the e series . If I didn't have to thumb it till it hit the water that'd be awesome. I'm still trying to learn the ways of the baitcast.

Tighten everything up until it barely lets out line when you click the button. Probably take off one set of internal brakes. That's how I taught my brother to cast, seemed to work for him.

The new Curado's aren't as good as the old Green ones.
Seriously, you would love the Revo S saltwater reel.Check out those Cashion microguide rods too.

I assume you use a microguide rod already, but just a warning if not. If you use one of the more limb brands of braid, you will have problems with it catching on the eyes. If you already use, then disreguard, just wanted you to know if not. I love them, now that Ive changed braid.
