1) It's a run-first offense
2) He's often priority one for opposing defenses
3) Doesn't get a lot of designed targets relative to the star TEs, for the above two reasons
4) Compared to all of the other quality receiving TEs, he's by far the most asked to stay inside
5) The staff likes to spread it around
6) Since Kaepernick's taken over he's gotten even less targets

The year he arrived and set what was the TE TD record at the time, the offense as a whole was lacking and Smith was too reliant on him. We have a balanced offense now and there aren't the touches to go around for him to be among leaders.

If he doesn't produce because he "sucks given his abilities," what is it that he's doing wrong (as opposed to the above)?

Targets generally equates to getting open. Why in the world is Vernon Davis not getting open? That is the whole point of this thread. He probably has physical gifts somewhere in between AJ and Megatron.

Probably like Finley. Pouts if he doesn't get targets and when he does, he tends to drop them, at least lately.

It also doesn't help that SF runs it about 60 times a game and when they do throw, Craptree gets the throws

Well, per ESPN he's gotten 5 targets in the last 3 games combined (NO, STL, MIA). Are you insinuating that his lack of targets is mostly a result of this inability to get open?

Does he suck that bad that after bending the Saints over last year, it's now his fault that he couldn't get a single target on an even worse defense? Inability to get open has never been an perceived deficiency in his game, maybe you're on to something no one else has ever noticed before.

There's numerous reasons VD hasn't been getting targets. Crabtree has also come along lately and Manningham has been getting more involved as the season's progressed. In terms of dispersion of balls, we're as varied as an offense like the Saints but with half the volume of throws. He's not getting a ton of opportunities, and the notion that it's mostly because he can't physically get open (with the exception of when he's being doubled) is quite frankly ridiculous.
