btw, this is the last time i'm going to respond to something you post

That's funny, I thought you stopped responding to me in the 'what is the point of the federal reserve' thread. I asked you to explain something about your link and you said 'it wasn't intended for me'. Then went on to berate me without addressing anything I asked about your link. I followed up and asked again, and you didn't respond. And whats hilarious is when I said I was leaving the thread you hopped right back in with a 'wait don't leave yet!'. How funny is that? I ask you a question, you duck for a couple pages then chime in as I'm leaving the thread. Would a guy with good character do that?

I've given no reason to suggest I can't comprehend my claimed influences. You sound angry my friend, you're not stupid, you're intelligent. But I have a feeling you don't like to be challenged. Your tone is arrogant towards Chomsky, as if you're better.. you end what you say with IMHO, as if that white washes the arrogance. Plenty of people disagreed with Chomsky in this thread but they did it in a humble way.

Just as you suggest I can't comprehend my influences, I'd bet my unimpressive bank account that you would get chewed up and spit out if you debated Chomsky. So back off the gas three sticks.

re: Some Chomsky quotes that are rather interesting

quote:

i interpret this as "the public is dumb, and only the enlightened like myself REALLY know whats going on".

If by "like myself" you mean the highly educated and/or academics (and I think there are some in this thread who have said as much), then you might want to take a look at his essay, "Propaganda: American Style" ( http://www.zpub.com/un/chomsky.html) where he indicts a lot of the higher educated:

quote:

Among educated people it worked very well. Studies show that among the more educated parts of the population, the government's propaganda about the war is now accepted unquestioningly. One reason that propaganda often works better on the educated than on the uneducated is that educated people read more, so they receive more propaganda. Another is that they have jobs in management, media, and academia and therefore work in some capacity as agents of the propaganda system--and they believe what the system expects them to believe. By and large, they're part of the privileged elite, and share the interests and perceptions of those in power.

Now, the extent to which this is a self-criticism is probably a matter of debate (he certainly seems as if he's been able to rise above it). But I think there's some peer contempt and he's not giving them all a pass. In fact, it seems his criticism is harsher for "people like him."

Chomsky is way too long on criticism for how short he is on solutions

I always liked this answer from Foucault:

Criticism "doesn’t have to be a premise of a deduction that concludes, 'this, then, is what needs to be done.' It should be an instrument for those who fight, those who resist and refuse what is."
