let's hypothetically say Miles went to Arkansas and LSU is looking for a HC. it's not a cake walk by any means and you can't automatically poach top coaches even if you're LSU.
There is a lot of truth in this post. we got extremely lucky to land a well established coach. Most programs go the mid major route for good hires and some even have to go snag a top level coordinator. It's all about timing, resources available, School reputation, how changing jobs will affect your reputation, work environment and probably somewhere near dead last on the list is pay. I mean these guys are making millions a year plus incentives if their winners.

Completely agree here. If all 14 schools are hitting on all cylinders with their program, Tennessee is no better than...6th-8th (with Auburn and South Carolina and behind LSU, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M and Alabama) in terms of its potential success, IMO.

if Vandy starts pumping more $$ into their program I actually think they will eventually surpass UT as well.
at Vandy you can sell BOTH the academics and SEC angle; which is a very valuable and unique sell.

The problem is, Vandy won't pump more $$ into its program. I don't know if they ever want their "priorities" that far out of whack, in their eyes.

That was enough to get one of my HS teammates to play there. The after-effect of him going there was Steve Spurrier having a public meltdown screaming at the guy's mom about how he'd never be on TV at Vandy.
The drawback to Vandy is that they need to be open to recruiting marginal students that can play.
I'm not sure how much their administration is willing to do on that end.

Probably the biggest thing holding them back. They just need to learn to use it as an advantage in recruiting instead of a drawback.

thus the point of my last sentence. I think franklin knows how to do it. If vandy is smart they will keep giving franklin everything he wants and let him build the program into a monster while Tennessee sucks.

Guys, I'm aware of UT's limitations the same as any of you. But I also realize that the right coach could overcome all that, and thrive.
UT has the facilities. Better overall facilities, in fact, than anyone else in this conference. And maybe any other conference.
They have the support. Both in terms of fans and rich boosters.
They are literally one man away from being back. The right man at head coach.
I fully believe all the issues Tennessee is having hiring a head coach have more to do with AD Dave Hart and a lot less to do with any built-in limitations.

It is a better job than Arkansas, but it won't matter if the AD is broke and you have idiots running the asylum.

At one point I might have agreed. But I think those times are past. Arky has better access to Texas talent, as well as North Louisiana. And it's a lot closer to Memphis than UT is.
If anything, I'd give the edge to Arky right now, but it would be a slight edge.
