Introduced in 1961, the .38-caliber S&W Model 52 was one of the premier American-made centerfire target pistols.

yeah, one of the gun shows had a segment on it. May have been "I have this old gun". Was very interesting.

OG,
Gallery of Guns shows a bunch of new revolvers in 38 Spec, but no semi-autos at this point in time. GOG (Davidson's) doesn't carry EVERY gun in production, but not many slip by them..... Prospects not looking good for a new 38 Spec semi-auto.....

Get the Coonan 357. It'll shoot .357 magnum and then .38 special with a swap of the recoil spring.

No, some seem bigger. You gonna need all the handle you can hold onto when you shoot that thing.

You don't really want one. It is a relatively difficult thing to make a semi-auto function reliably with a rimmed cartridge like the .38 Special. There are feeding issues that one doesn't have with a rimless case. That is why they've never really made that many of them and they never were that popular.

Geauxt, although not part of the question, why are you looking for a semi auto in .38 special?

Sorry for the delay on getting back on this... The reason I would consider a 38 semi is that through the years, I've kinda streamlined my guns and ammo situation.. for instance, all shotguns are now 12 ga's, all deer rifles are 7 mags, all small rifles are 22 lr, and just got a new LCR in 38 and would like to get a semi in 38, for the same bullets... In other words, I want to be able to grab a gun and not even have to consider having to think about the "right" ammo.. I learned this lesson in carrying the kids deer hunting many moons ago... Wrong bullets would get put in pockets while rushing out the door... So, when all of us had 7 mags, we all used the same bullets,,, etc... It really has it's advantages

Coonan has found a way to make it work.

He has a patented system on his magazines (they're $60 bucks each!) with a rotating follower. It prevents the rims from stacking too hard on top of each other. As you can see here, the piece in the middle allows the follower to rotate.

Check out this guy's channel if you have doubts. He has a bunch of high speed video of it and it looks pretty sweet. Also in this video, he has a guy shoot it for the first time and he loves it.

Something to add is that you get even more velocity out of the .357 magnum round in a semi auto since there is no cylinder gap. I forget the exact amount but I think it's somewhere around a 25% velocity increase.

I've done a lot of homework on this handgun. It's not child's play. It's a very well-thought out design and I can't wait to have money so I can own one. This gun WILL BE my my next 1911.

Well I imagine the cost per round would be more expensive than say, 9mm. What's a box of 50 rounds cost? Divide that number by 50 to get cost/round.

Oh...

Well the gun can shoot both. All you have to do is change the recoil spring out.

I think price is somewhere around $1200-$1300.

The price is competitive for upper-end 1911s.
