It won't pay off for a good 20-40 years to be sure, but it would be heavily beneficial to the US. We'd own the fricking Moon more or less and anyone who wanted to get resources from it would have to contend with us.

Or we could ... I dunno ... spend a shitton less and continue to explore Earth for said resources?

Sad to say, but off-Earth resources will not be economical until the launch cost is less than drilling into Earth.

There's no doubt about that. The space race was such an awesome point in man's history. Give a pile of very smart people a challenge and enough resources and they can make amazing things happen.

Boy if we could ever return to that glory.

I was here in '69 when we landed on the moon. You are exactly right. What we need is some spirit of competition. Competition drives ambition and achievement. Ambition and a thirst for adventure drive progress and success. We have let these ideals slip away from us. It is time we started embracing them again.

I know that the rover is a mobile lab and there's really no need to, but I want one to bring a mars rock back.

NASA sucks. Lets do the same thing over again but lets wait 8 years to do it. At this pace the sun will burn out before we have our damn Jetsons Flying Cars.

The shite we're looking for up there isn't found in abundance on Earth.

quote:

Sad to say, but off-Earth resources will not be economical until the launch cost is less than drilling into Earth.

And that won't happen until we have a space elevator. Its a hell of a lot simpler getting the supplies back to Earth than it would be getting them out of Earth's orbit. All they have to do is drop it in Earth's orbit and calculate where it will land (with a parachute of course). Once the Moon becomes a more primary point of launch compared to the Earth, it becomes more economically feasible.

Hey, but instead of advancing ourselves as a species, let's continue to bomb brown people which costs 20 times more than what it would cost to set up a great space program, which would increase our morale and our chances of being charge for the foreseeable future. Its people like you that would shut down the whole thing and not return until it was too late and we've already lost the Space Race. But yeah, lets continue with bull shite wars that I don't think anyone could rationally tell you why we're still over there, instead of doing something great for a fraction of the cost.

frick this.

Why don't we get some people with terminal illness that happened to work for NASA their whole careers?

One way trip to Mars, BOOM!
