Instead of this analysis, I'd recommend another couple things you can do. 1) Take LSU and Alabama and compare penalties per game in SEC games vs, non-SEC games where other refs are used with the same teams. And 2) Rather than just look at penalties called on the teams, I'd look at the rate at which penalties are called on the opposition.

And your watching with a referees experience and zero bias, correct?
Anticipated this exact response...so here you go. Experience many moons past was in peewee football, so it's hard to gain credibility, but the 3D glasses minimized any inherent bias.
Hope this clarifies for ya! When you are my age it's easy to reduce bias...seem to see the world a little clearer nowadays.

I agree that the analysis should go deeper, but this is a good start.
It should be a near statistical impossibility for Alabama to have less penalties EVERY SINGLE YEAR for 10 years given the change in variables.
Different coaches, the same coach during two different time periods with each team, different players, etc. Penalties per game should not be such a consistent outcome between two teams unless there is a bias. It would be an amazing coincidence for these results to be this consistent every single year for 10 years.
I don't know if its a conspiracy or not, but it is NOT a coincidence. There is an explanation. The explanation should not be that Bama is the more disciplined team, considering that the coaching/player variable has changed, and even been exercised at both places.
Keep digging.

Man, I always love that gif and think it needs to be watched 30 times in a row to really let the reality sink in...
ETA: Four, FOUR count em, foot moves and still a spot 5 inches further past the foot.

I don't think it's a conspiracy. It's just simple bias. The SEC offices are in Alabama. Consequently most of the refs are from Alabama. Every day they hear that every call against Bama was a bad call. It has to affect them.

I see it as blatant and intentional.

Not much evidence here. Now if you could show that for the past 10 years Bama was the least penalized team in the SEC year after year you might have something.

Go back to the SECR gump...

My favorite part of that gif is him turning to look over his left shoulder, not seeing the down marker, than looking back to his right and finding the marker so that he could nudge it to the stick.
It's so ridiculous you'd assume someone Photoshopped the yard marker back there.

Have you run a comparison in penalties on Bama in sec games vs bowl games and ooc with no sec officials
Posted on 12/5/12 at 12:03 am to TutHillTiger
What really needs to be done is compare all subjective penalties vs non subjective penalties for bama. Offsides and procedure should not count for any teams in this study! Only the penalties that rely on the officials opinion... PI, holding, pf etc.

Damn now we can't even comment about documented stats without being called whiners? Are you really so unconfident in your manhood? Weird.

very fair point. My guess is that would skew the statistics further in bama's favor.
