Alright, two down, three to go.

So I'm a lefty, and have a left-handed Remington 700 for hunting that I bought in the early 2000s for deer in .270.
Dont hunt much anymore, and thinking about making ita project down the road.
Can I change calibers and just keep the left handed action? What should I change to for 500-800 yard shots? 7.62x51mm was my first thought.
Anyone undertake something like this before? You guys think its worth it, or just buy something else?

No expert, but have had an expert gunsmith make several guns for me/family. I would think the 270 action would not be able to hold a larger brass case.

I know you can take a .300 WBY and make it hold an 8mm case. Essentially a 7STW. 8mm casing / 7mm bullet. There are commercially produced ammo for this as well.

800 yds is a long damn shot on a deer. You will also need to look at the terminal ballistics for your bullets at that range. You are entering an ethical gray area at that distance. SO...pucker up.

I can shoot that far too with iron sights... I wouldn't hit anything but I could let it fly.

Sorry, didn't explain enough. Not trying to hunt anymore, this is just targets. Buck fever broke after I got out of active service, can't get it back

I can shoot 500-800 yards with my .270. The term sniper rifle just makes me giggle. If your shooting that far put more money into a scope then anything.

I appreciate what you do/did for us. That's a bitch that you can't get the fever back.

Figured you would be the go-to guy to answer the question of changing the calibers/keeping the same action on the rifle

Thanks man, and believe me, I tried. I've gone a few times, killed the biggest buck of my whole life, and its was just "meh." Still trying to go with my grandfather a bit more, but its more for the time with him. Didnt want the rifle to go to waste though, and I would like a tack-driving machine for all the range time I get now.

These terms are just ones that always irk me:

Assault Rifle
Sniper Rifle
Clip
Assault Pistol
Machine Gun

I'm sure they're more that I'm not thinking of. The only reason it bothers me is because of how much negative baggage those words hold. It's nothing against you, just the word. Your title could just as easily be "Thoughts - Building a New Rifle." Just sayin...

But I think the Remington 700 is a great starting place for building a both rifle.

clip, gun and bullet drive me nuts, but am I missing a hidden meaning behind "AR" and "LMG/HMG" or something? Hell, its what it stands for, no!?

(Answers for those wondering, its magazine, weapon, and round)

If you want to get the fire back in deer hunting, you should pick up a bow. Btw, how have you been? We went to school together if you're not sure who I am.

AR doesn't stand for Assault Rifle. (but I think you were joking about that right?)

Don't see why gun and bullet would be so bad...

ETA: Bayoushooter has quite a few members that do long range competition shooting... I would definitely spend some time over there.

Lol, I shoot lefty too so if you ever consider it, I get a new bow every two years so I usually have one for sale. I can promise you, the way the new bows are, pulling back 60 lbs is a piece of cake.

Do you honestly have a place where you'd be shooting 800 yards often enough to make it worthwhile to build the rifle? I've got one and I haven't taken a shot like that in FOREVER.

As for what you've got, you could obviously put a 30-06 barrel on it since that's what the .270 is built on but why? Like you said, you can shoot a .223 at 500. You could do the same with a .270. And MUCH more accurately. As long as terminal ballistics doesn't matter, and honestly at 800 yards it doesn't because you aren't hunting with it and even if you were, you'd still be using whatever round you've tuned for that rifle so that you could actually hit something, so we're back where we started.

Why not just accurize the .270?

It's a good round. You'd end up with a highly accurate rifle that you could actually hunt with if you wanted to or if you didn't, it would kill the frick out of anybody you chose to snuff with it.
