new into duck hunting, saw something about a pull-cord on lasportsman.com. how far do you pull the ducks? is there a spring or a weight involved to get the ducks to 'pull-back' to their original positions??

TIA.

also, i've been hunting wood ducks in some pretty thick holes, without a lot of open water. what other ducks will show up in an area like this? i have heard mallards but i also heard that they won't show up until the weather gets cold. i am hunting in the atchafalaya basin.

We use a mojo pole with about a 3 foot piece of bungee cord. tie a couple of decoys on the line and run about 90 feet of line back to you. The bungee has just enough stretch to allow the decoys to make ripples.

The 90 feet of cord also gives you a good idea of how far 30 yards is in front of you.

Mallards and grey ducks will get in those woods holes. I like a little more of an open spot so ducks can see decoys and your jerk string, and you have a chance at other species like teal and what not...

how 'open' does it need to be to attract other species? open the size of a football field? or open half that or a quarter that or what?

Always set up with the wind at your back. Birds land into the wind. Decoys settings to the open area you are hunting, but a good starting point is to set them 20-30 yards away from you. That helps to keep the ducks eyes off your blind area.

Not necessarily, It's just that if something is between me and the end of the jerk string I know it's killable, and not to shoot at anything more than 10 or 15 yards past it...

Also, I realize everything doesn't fly right over the water. You have to expand your mind and extrapolate the distance over your head by changing the angle 90 degrees... if that makes sense what I'm saying.

I bought a pull cord system last year that has it's own anchor with 4 swivels on it. Had a spoony light right beside them & would swim with them as fast or slow as you could pull it. It was very intertaining

Any one of the above has the potential to attract ducks. I have shot mallards in holes that were formed just by one tree top falling. Key is to have water on the edges of the ring where the ducks can swim off into and hide. In my experience they look for that more than an "open" spot to land. If they feel safe they will find a way to get in.

someone mentioned above that other ducks like teal (and i'm presuming pintails & widgeon) prefer open water, so i guess i was asking how open he meant for the other species of ducks besides mallards and wood ducks.

Teal will go into a decent size ring in the woods, quarter size of a football field would be the smallest I would say. Pintail are an open water bird that normally don't venture into the woods. You may get a widgeon or two.

Anywhere from 1/2 an acre to a wide open field. Half a football field or bigger...
