Surprised someone in Washington didn't make sure their application was accidentally lost in the mail

He did an interview with Angel Clark today. Talked about the fully printed gun prototypes they are making now.

Watched his Glenn Beck interview. I thought he did well. He is obviously bright and very calculating in his responses.

It really could. I remember this kid saying " its over, I did it" in the beck interview. It was delightfully creepy. He knows what they did can't be taken back. I chuckled and then had the urge to punch beck in the neck.

You should watch his video over at defcad.com

I think I saw the new one a few days ago. I like the guy, and think he has the perfect mix of idealism, philosophy and IDGAF.

Plus I like guns. A lot.

Cody Wilson did an AMA on reddit. Here are some of the highlights some of you worry worts need to see:

quote:

For sure. In fact, we've done about as much as is possible on the AR platform in fused deposition ABS. .223/5.56 is a high pressure round, and doing an upper and barrel is not realistic.

quote:

The AR is simply too powerful a rifle to be printed in ABS. I don't see this happening, but it may be possible for them to print handguns soon.

quote:

Actually, printable springs are doable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbszBmZX4KA But in these weak and brittle thermosets/plastics we've got issues making barrels and bolts.

As you can see, the chances of every slap dick emo kid printing his own arsenal and going on a shooting spree are not very realistic

I really wonder... It seems to me the materials will need to be much more complex and improved to drive adoption. But then adoption doesn't seem to be slowing down. We need intrepid people to push the tech if it's going to go anywhere.

quote:

Barrel work is going very well. Actually we've exploded and broken a few! But I'm a survivor.

quote:

I don't think there's a direct personal advantage in printing a gun versus making or purchasing a traditional one. Printed guns aren't even proven technology, and are extremely impractical devices from my experience.

Not yet. But what about designing a rifle from the ground up to be plastic? The AR with it's mainspring in back is a bad platform. There are rifles, like the F2000 and Tavor that are close already. Take one of those designs and tweak them.

I think the limiting factor is creating a barrel that can handle the pressures needed. I left out a quote where he even said the .22LR was too high of a pressure

The barrel is probably the least concerning part IMO and all plastic design is not a requirement for me. I think the ability to create a huge percentage of the weapon with little expertise, and without having to be present and expending man hours is critical. 3d printing will accomplish at least this, if not more.

Well if you can't successfully fire more than a round or fire a round without maiming yourself, then what is the point?
