Blops II Campaign Question Re: Strikeforce

Do you have to do the Strikeforce missions or do they not offer anything to the main story? I did one and thought it was pointless

I was doing a veteran campaign and just straight up quit when I tried one of these. I got absolutely annihilated.

They impact the storyline, but you are hindered by thefact that the friendly AI is beyond incompetent.
Best to leave reserve troops at the beginning spawn because they cannot fight their way out of a paper bag.

Only way I have had any success on these on harder difficulties is just controlling the characters myself. It's too damn slow to control it from above and it's ridiculous how many enemies are constantly thrown at you.
