My wife and I both have 1m 20 term, she pays 410 yr and I pay 485. Both mid 30's, preferred best through Hartford

Do companies even issue 20k term policies? The companies I deal with do not. Since you mentioned the health history and face amount, a guaranteed issued product makes sense.
Term policies can be more expensive (i'm talking actual monthly premium) than permanent policies when you factor in heart problems and age.

That policy would probably cost him $15-30k a year.
