using a kind of dishonest accounting people made it look like UConn lost money. The bowl payouts are shared with the conference, so if you take their share minus their expenses for the game, then they lost money. That doesn't count their of other Big East Bowls or account for the fact that UConn gets the same share in years they didn't go to BCS Bowls.
I dont think sharing bowl money is universal among conferences. I Don't know if big east does it or not though

If they don't then no way did UConn lose money going to the Fiesta Bowl. The payout is something like $17-18M.

What's a realistic number here? I think it's hilarious.

try reading the thread
UConn lost money going to the Fiesta Bowl that year because the bowl revenue is shared with other members of their conference. So their expenses exceeded their SHARE of that year's BCS bowl. In every other year they have been in the Big East they got the same share, without the costs. So it's kind of dishonest accounting to show they lost money used by the writers of death to the BCS.

Try not being a dick.
I was just linking an article to where they say they lost money.
It was no indictment of your belief.

MAC Teams in bowls:
Toldeo, Potato Bowl, $325,000
CMU, Little Ceasers, $750,000
Kent State, GoDaddy, $750,000
NIU, Orange, $17,000,000
So if you take the total, and divide by 13(12 MAC teams + conf), each team would get 1.44 million. I don't see how NIU's expenses will be greater than that

they have to send the team, band, etc
they have to buy $17k tickets at like $250 a pop or something. that's like $4.25M on top of the travel expenses
we're talking $4-6M total at least

They could and will probably easily exceed that amount. They are forced to buy 17,500 tickets, must fly the team and band to the game and put them up for at least 3 to 4 nights in a hotel in Miami and then fly them back.
Lets say the fans buy 10,000 tickets, then that means the Athletic Department has to eat the remaining 7,500 tickets.

From the maligned article I linked for UCONN and the Fiesta:
quote:
The athletic department expenses were $4,280,998

to be fair they didn't really lose though
quote:
How much would be lost became clear on Wednesday, when bowl documents obtained by The Daily Campus, the university's student newspaper, revealed that UConn lost nearly $1.8 million.
The athletic department expenses were $4,280,998 while it received a payout of $2,523,200
quote:
The blow from the money lost on the Fiesta Bowl will be cushioned by the $3.8 million UConn will receive from the Big East, probably in late spring. Each football-playing school in the league will receive that amount as its cut from bowl and television revenue.

Christ...
They did lose money on THE GAME.
Yes, they made it up in the end, but they did, apparently, lose money on that one game.
Agreeing that it's shitty to make it seem like they didn't make it up on the back-end.

it's just misleading. if bruce feldman or whomever hadn't written that stupid book making deceptive arguments, people wouldn't care as much

LSU lost money last year IIRC.

sigh, if you read the thread you would understand, it's not my belief that UConn did not lose money, it's my belief that they only lost money because of the way it's accounted for.
I said UConn lost money because of accounting since the revenue is shared with with conference. Someone else said he wasn't sure all conferences share revenue. Then i said if they did not share then UConn would not have lost money since the payout is $17-18M.
To summarize on paper they lost money because their costs to attend the Fiesta Bowl was greater than their share of the payout. That accounting does not include their share of other bowl games or their share of bowl revenue when they don't go to a BCS Bowl and have to buy 17,500 tix.

cheapest Orange Bowl tix are $120. The attendance would have been horrible regardless of NIU.
Maybe LSU, or S. Carolina could have brought enough fans to sell out the game.
I love the bowls, but trying to regulate them and not letting them just invite who they want is making them irrelevant and crappy.
The Liberty Bowl is a worthless rematch b/n Iowa St. and Tulsa. The BCS bowls are cash cows and not made for N. Illinois and Boise St. If a small conference team is undefeated and in the hunt for the MNC, then yeah they deserve a spot in one of the big bowls.
There's just too many dang bowls now anyways. Hopefully the demand will cause them to be financially unviable but the TV contracts that make them cash boons are the same sword that encourages people to stay home. I'm surprised the BCS title game isn't a PPV game, but the advertising $'s it creates are large enough to not have to pay to watch it.
