CRAZY: Northern Illinois will have to buy more Orange Bowl tickets (17,500) than what they avg'd per game this season (15,670)

their losses will likely be in the 7-figures

I agree. Can see a lot of people from Chicago heading down. And I'm sure flights from Chicago to Miami are cheap.

most non-major programs lose a ton of money on BCS bowl games. i'll give Boise credit in that they show up for their BCS bowls

You have to read Death to the BCS. Most teams lose a lot of cash on bowl games. After schools send the team and band and are forced to buy the ticket allotment, they end up in the red. Plus, those payout numbers for some bowls are a starter that gets negotiated down. The Motor City Bowl a few years ago had a handful of schools bidding to play, and I think the Bowl game got Florida Atlantic to accept no payment.

that book, if memory serves, leaves out some important points

teams lose money on their individual bowls, but they make money with the conference splits...at least in major conferences

so LSU will lose money on its trip to atlanta, but with all the other bowl money shares, it comes out ahead

Virginia Tech lost $400-500k when they played Stanford 2 years ago. Clemson lost $100-200k last year. At least that is what they reported.

using a kind of dishonest accounting people made it look like UConn lost money. The bowl payouts are shared with the conference, so if you take their share minus their expenses for the game, then they lost money. That doesn't count their of other Big East Bowls or account for the fact that UConn gets the same share in years they didn't go to BCS Bowls.

i don't think the MAC has nearly enough to make up for the losses NIU will sustain, though

For that MAC it's a different story, of course. but the Big East is in every year, So this year UConn gets what ever their share is this year and have $0 cost
