Prevent defense almost proves fatal again

I seriously don't understand why teams in college run prevent defense when the clock can stop on first downs for the chains to move. It burned LSU against Bama this year and almost proved fatal against Bama.

I don't understand it either.
You don't want to give up a big pass play for a TD, so you give up a bunch of small ones and let your opponent try for a not-so big pass play to beat you.
It's a pretty damned stupid philosophy. But hey, I'm not paid millions to coach.
