i certainly agree that the kids of good parents will turn out better. But my whole point to this is that good parents can't be there every second.

And although bans don't work for adults, they are moderately successful with kids. With kids they have to search high and low to find somewhere that would constantly sell cigarettes to them to support a smoking habit. Bans for adults simply create a black market.

So you are talking about two different issues.

No government at all.

Completely agree. That's my point.

Energy drinks are a fairly mild item to be banning, it's kind of easy to understand why people think it's silly.

I agree and this is the argument I would make. It's a strange ban that will probably be pointless.

However, when a person says that they are against this law because they are for civil liberties, they are being hypocritical unless they are against all restrictions on civil liberties IMO.

C;mon, how many people really advocate this?

I think it's another case of media hyping a particular case, or cases and scared people advocating extremes in response.

Not necessarily. It all comes down to what people interpret as necessary. Defense of borders, ect...and how it's individually defined. I think protecting people against themselves is a bit too much and the civil liberties claim is valid.

GMorgan, Wiki, and I believe one other anarcho-capitalist who's handle escapes me.

Like I said, 2-3.

OK, but are you against the government protecting kids from any substances or just silly things like energy drinks? If its a civil liberties thing then you have to be against bans on selling porn, alcohol, etc to kids as well no?

I am more interesting in kids being exposed to reactionary, anti-Statist views in the public square.
But an "energy drink" or a "bag of chips" goes a long way in socializing a child that he is a "free" human being, which may ultimately be contrary to the authority of The State.

Which is why in the name of Social Progress I support all State efforts to limit unnecessary freedom, particularly with our American youth.

Our Brave New World requires that even our youth commit to serve The State before their own selfish desires.

Yes, I am against banning age restrictions on those kind of things simply because not only is it a restriction on what people want to do, it's also very ineffective.

we all have our boundaries. Lots of people here arguing against me don't think alcohol should be sold to kids. So you guys have your limit, too. How far do you guys want to take it?

Personally I think the drinking age should probably be lowered to about 16

Maybe people would be more ambitious in their acquisition of money if they found an expensive hobby early in life

I can respect your honesty.

I can't imagine ever advocating for the removal of age restrictions on those kinds of things, but if I'm honest about it, I doubt I'd be incredibly upset if the bans were lifted.

I can see both sides, but liquor bans don't stop kids from drinking so I don't think they are that effective anyway. Avg first drink is 12 years of age, I believe...anyway.

I think the energy drink ban for minors is kind of ridiculous though. It's like "assault weapon" ban IMO.

Everyone is arguing about the fact that kids are not rational enough to make a decision if it is healthy. But this ban would go the age of 19. Teenage girls get abortions. "kids" can sign up and join our military. They can drive a car (very dangerous) and smoke and use other tobacco products. They can vote. How can you possibly think this is okay?

Alcohol should be back to 18 too while were arguing about this stuff.

Almost everyone in this thread completely missed the glaring stupdity in this idiotic legislative move...

They want it to be until you are 19

You can buy cigarettes at 18, which are a whole hell of a lot worse for you than an energy drink.

It does not make the legislation any less stupid.

If you want to talk states rights, you should talk about how the fed strongarms the states into the 21 alcohol age by threatening to cut highway funding if they have it any lower.

1) If the state is doing it, all you I hate the Fed Gov and give all the power to the state should be thrilled. But... I guess when the state who you empowered does anything you don't like well too bad.

These rules, as stated above are for kids. Even so, the hypocrisy of the gov. on any level sanctioning sales of anything that we know can kill you is crazy. Energy drinks as far as I know won't kill you but kids don't need that crap. How can the gov. allow tobacco sales and help the distribution? I know tax revenue is what counts.

People are obsessed with the Big Brother scare always thrown around here. More like gov. doing something smart for once.

and besides all you states righters. Doen't NY state have the right to decide this no matter what your state sayd.

Either way the soda ban is stupid.

How is it smart? I can guaran-fricking-tee banning energy drink sales to minors ain't gonna stop them from drinking it. In fact, it will become instantly super cool.

States should still be constrained by individual rights. A state centered direct democracy is pure shit, and prohibiting consumption of unhealthy products is wrong and a waste of time. It's another way for them to collect "revenue" through fines.

It's their right to be stupid because of states rights. I like the idea of banning it for minors. I think Bloomberg;s idea of banning the big sodas is silly. and yes I work in Bloomberg;s city.

So 18yrs old is a minor now? You can believe what you want to believe in regards to whether this is good, but you are a complete moron if you don't see the issue with the age.

YOU CAN BUY CIGARETTES AT 18, BUT CANNOT BUY AN ENERGY DRINK....

You don't see anything wrong with that?

Maybe it is for 17 and below. Can't drink till 21. No idea about age for smoking. I know can't buy lottery tickets unless 18.

Consistency is never consistent.
