1. Carter Beauford/DMB - The "cleanest" drummer I've ever heard. His improv and placement of accents is second to none. The only drummer in mainstream music that plays melodies with the drums. Very melodic and free style. My favorite because he most closely matched my style of play. I always thought drummers should be more at liberty to play more melodic, but always felt like they should be constrained because they would overdo it. Beauford sort of broke that barrier IMO and made it OK to not just be the time keeper and only fill on breaks.

2. Neil Peart/Rush - Legend. Master of the downbeat. Fundamentally great. Also very clean. Doesn't "overplay" yet is still able to reveal his skill. That's hard to do. Impeccable timing.

3. Danny Carey/Tool - Another master of the downbeat. Amazing fills. Genius fills.

4. John Bonham/LZ - Different. Different than anything before or after. Very organic sound and he really contributed to that organic sound of the band more than he gets credit for.

5. Buddy Rich/Jazz - List wouldn't be replete without a 3-piece, traditional stick jazz drummer. One of the best, although there are many great ones. Could work a snare like no other. Played with some great jazz artists.

Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, others)
Dino Campanella
Zach Hill (Hella, Team Sleep, others)
Neil Peart (Rush)
Morgan Agren (Frank Zappa, Kaipa, Mats and Morgan, Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects, and many others)

Pay special attention to the video of Morgan around the 2 minute mark. Dude's heart must beat about 130 times per minute.

Two that I had a really hard time leaving off. Notice that one of the guys I listed is notable as keeping up with Fredrik of Meshuggah.

I LOVE STEVE JORDAN, but I also love all of John Mayer's music. Haha

Carter Beauford is one of the few drummers that still makes say WOW every time he picks up a pair of sticks.

I like Carter as well.

Steve has so much soul in his beats. He will always be my favorite drummer.

Why, oh wise one? Tell us why your wisdom leads you to laugh at considering Neil Peart a favorite drummer. We can all learn from your superiority.

ETA - I see that you weren't even man enough to post your own list before criticizing others'. Post yours and let me laugh.

I don't know if I read it on here or saw it looking up random youtube videos one day, but I saw Peart doing an interview where he said that of all the times he's played "Tom Sawyer", he's rarely ever played it correct. He wrote it to be so hard to play that he has to be on that night, to get it right.

Copeland is another one. I love how he plays traditional grip and is so smooth and fluid with his playing.

At 1:06 Danny solves worl hunger, creates world peace, stops global warming, and cures AIDS.

Neil Peart is a great percussionist, but no where near the drummer that Danny is....

Him and Mike Portnoy are the two best out there.

Peart is a fantastic drummer

But I laugh when people say "he's the best drummer ever!!!"
