| GSP - Silva (Posted on 11/29/12 at 11:17 am)
What is the board's take on this? Silva fights at 185, GSP at 170. Doesn't sound like that much of a difference and tons of fighters have moved up or down a weight class either temporarily or permanently. GSP appears to want the fight to take place at 170, period. Silva's camp seems to be willing to fight at a catch-weight of 177-178. Personally, I think the fight at 170 is ridiculous and no way Silva would agree. Yeah he has fought at 170 before, but he would be a fool to do it now. GSP would eat him up at 170. Silva would be a weakened shell IMO. So, I tend to side with Silva on this one and believe a fight at 177 is fair. I am a bigger Rush fan than Silva fan as well. I think Silva wins at 177, but GSP would certainly have a good shot with his takedowns while takedown defense is Anderson's weakest link. FTR, Anderson is at about 205 right now and is 6'2. Asking him to cut to 170 to face a physical specimin who is 5'10 and fighting in his optimal weight class isn't going to happen and shouldn't. Even if it did and GSP won, I would discount it as the advantage would be too large anyway.

fighting at 178 seems like the best way to make the fight happen Silva is the bigger guy and will have an advantage in size but he'll have to cut a lot to get to that weight.

Silva walks around at like 220, cutting to 170 would be insane

Why doesn't Silva step up and destroy Bones Jones and hold both titles. I don't follow MMA as closely as I used to but Silva straight up whips ppls ass. Chonen gave him a run but he embarrassed Griffin....and Franklin twice.

He would not destroy Bones Jones. Silva's long reach and unorthodox but deadly striking would be matched by the same with Bones except Bones is younger and bigger. Bones is a big LHW. He may eventually move up to HW. I think he would beat Silva.

I think Silva destroys GSP. Anderson Silva just beat Chael Sonnen who is a better wrestler than GSP and for the most part shut down Sonnens takedowns in the second fight. On the feet Silva would rip GSP a new one. This fight would be a massacre. Silva vs Jones is a much better matchup.

Don't want to see the fight. Silva is simply a much bigger man they don't belong in the cage together. Silva vs Jones is the fight I want to see. I think Silva uses his superior hand and foot speed to pick Jones apart from a distance and keep the fight standing.

Jones is quick as a cat too. And has at least as long a reach as Silva, maybe a bit longer. I am not sure it will ever happen though. If Bones finishes cleaning out the top 205 guys, including Hendo, he has expressed interest in putting on weight and moving up to HW. His frame could handle an additional 20 lbs up into the 225-230 range.

To be fair, Sonnen took Silva down almost immediately in the first round and controlled him and won the round. That spinning WTF he tried was idiotic though.

Jones has a much longer reach but no where near the footwork, elusiveness or hand speed of Anderson.

true but in the second round Sonnen was lost when he couldn't get the takedown and the fight was pretty much done when Silva could stand with him. in a 5 round fight I don't see GSP making it all 5 rounds without getting caught somewhere.

The thing with Jones vs Anderson fight that would be interesting is if Anderson could stop Jones takedowns. I think Anderson could hold his own on the feet but on the bottom is where I'd be afraid for Anderson with Jones raining down those nasty elbows.

Anderson would more than hold his own the feet, he would dominate Jones IMO.
