| Point Forward on Rookies (Posted on 11/28/12 at 5:10 pm)
SI has an article up on rookies not named Davis and Lillard. Rivers review is under the Concerning heading and isn't terribly complimentary. LINK
quote:
Austin Rivers, New Orleans Hornets Rivers has had a miserable first month to his NBA career, to the point that the Hornets — who are already missing Eric Gordon and Anthony Davis and relying heavily on Greivis Vasquez, mind you — are actually better with Rivers off the floor. He’s an all-offense player who frankly doesn’t look comfortable when participating in an orchestrated effort. The problem isn’t that Rivers is inherently selfish, or flawed by personality; his game is simply isolation-driven, and far too inefficient for NBA dependency. Some can get by with a similar approach given their physical advantages or exemplary shooting, but Rivers has neither working in his favor. He’s physically unremarkable by NBA standards, only a decent shooter and can’t create enough off the bounce to warrant investing a considerable number of possessions in his game. There was plenty of hand-wringing when the Hornets selected the positionally redundant Rivers with the 10th pick in the draft, and the headache of balancing Rivers and Gordon is yet to come. But for now, Rivers and Hornets head coach Monty Williams still have plenty to figure out, as they rummage for ways to stretch and contort a bundle of inefficiency into a useful basketball player
Obviously a lot of the things everyone knew about Rivers before the draft. And his play for most of the season has been wretched. On the bright side, this was most assuredly written before Tuesday's good showing for Rivers. A long way for him to go, but the $64,000 question still stands: can he shoot, create, and avoid turnovers that well on a consistent basis?

He's still only 20. Of course it's gonna be rough, he looks lost at times on the court. When Gordon gets back it'll take pressure off him and he won't be so tense on the court.

He can shoot. His struggle aren't shooting. It's finishing after contact. That will come with growth and devleopment. He can create as is indicated by his 3.4 apg and his ability to get anywhere he wants on the court. As for turnovers, he has a very good a/t ratio. He isn't prone to turning the ball over.

Nah, his shooting outside of the Flop City game has been pretty bad so far. He is just too much of a liability behind the stripe to pair with Vasquez too much right now. Both of them shot out of their minds against Flop City.

I think this is pretty unfair at this point. He's a rookie in the first month of the season. If there's one thing we know about Monty, he will sit you if you don't play D.

He's been weak on his FT shooting but he's been lights out after his 0-6 start behind the arc. Since the Houston game, he's shot 9-16 behind the arc for a whooping 56%. His problem is and has always been finishing in the lane. He can't handle contact very well and seem to look for contact rather than avoid it. If those shots in the paint continue to fall the way they did against the Clippers, his FG% will shoot up boards. His poor FG % isn't due to his shooting, when he shoots, I find that he makes his shots at a good rate but when he drives to the basket his % dips down significantly. There's a misconception that he's a poor shooter, But in reality, he's a poor finisher. His shooting % is misleading due to this very reason.

Yep. Even Davis is not particularly good defensively. Takes time to adjust

I disagree. He currently struggles on the defensive end so he that statement is fair. He is speaking in present tense on his abilities now not his potential.

Mike Conley was loathed for his first three seasons in Memphis, and with good reason. He was terrible. It's now year 5 and I'll be shocked if he isn't an all-star. Players are coming out of college earlier and earlier, and we're expecting the same polished product. Have to give these really young guys time.

Yep. There's no reason to be down on a 20 year old who just finished his freshman year in college because he isn't playing great at the highest level of competition. Rivers has elite quickness, which is something you can never teach. He needs time to work on his finishing, shooting, and free throws, which are easily improved with hard work, and we know that Rivers is putting in whatever work it takes to get better.

Kidding right? He has no shot. CP3 Westbrook Parker Harden Durant Kobe eta: not including Lin who will likely get voted in as a starter

quite frankly your list isn't even worth responding too. not sure why I am, just wanted to let you know that I think you're insanely ignorant.

I can name 3 players on that list that don't play the same position as Conley. There will be at least 2 grizzlies picked to an all star team, and both will likely be coaches decisions. Due to the fan voting format. Conley and Zbo or Conley and Gasol.

There are 12 players on the team. 6 will be guards. Yao was voted to start the Allstar team without playing a game. Pencil in Lin as the startig PG. So Conley will get in over CP3 or Westbrook or Parker?

fan vote will likely keep him off. If the coach has any sense he'll take him as a coaches pick. most underrated PG in the NBA.

The All-Star team votes don't go to PGs or SGs. Only Guards and Forwards.
